Registration Reminders

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
1.   ADVISING IS MANDATORY

Students with special scheduling needs begin registration 3/31/16.  Registration appointments go backwards by credit level – Seniors first, then Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen.  Advising is mandatory for all ENSP students, regardless of Concentration, GPA, or credits earned. You should go to your assigned advisor for advising -- not to the College Office. The new formatting of appointment information in TESTUDO is confusing.

·     ==>  To find out when you register, go to: http://www.testudo.umd.edu/ and look for Appointment and Registration Status.

==>  Your registration appointment is when the computer will let you in to register for Fall 2016.  Registration appointments are scheduled by credits completed, so the only way to get an earlier appointment than the one you have been assigned is to transfer AP or transfer credits that may not have been posted.

==>  You should go to your assigned advisor for advising -- not to the College Office. The new formatting of appointment information in TESTUDO is confusing.

·     ==>  Do not worry if you have a late appointment – the University has a system for “protecting” seats in lower-level classes so you will have open classes, even if your appointment is at the very end!  For example, notice that some classes appear to have only 2-3 seats available.  That means only a few upper-level students can sign up for lower-level classes; then the class closes.  Classes like this will open and close, open and close, all semester long.  Students who register for the course when it is closed will be placed on a Holdfile (a waitlist for a Waitlist).  Most students who get on Holdfiles during registration period will end up getting their courses of choice, but you should always sign up for alternate classes, just in case.

If you have any ADVISING BLOCKS, they will be listed just below your appointment time.  Read on…

2.  REGISTRATION BLOCKS

Ideally, you will find you have only one advising block:  MANDATORY ADVISING.  After you meet your advisor, your block will be lifted.   Registration blocks are listed right below your registration time -- and you can scroll down to see what they mean.

Remember:  ENSP STUDENTS with 40+ CREDITS COMPLETED must submit a graduation plan before you can be cleared to register.  This is an official ENSP advising policy. By now, you should have received several reminders if you are one of these students. Go here for more information:   http://www.ensp.umd.edu/advising/graduation-plans

There are THREE common University registration blocks.  Academic advisors CANNOT clear UNIVERSITY blocks.  You must go to the relevant office several days in advance to resolve these blocks.  Start early.

==> VACCINATION BLOCKS.
First semester students - especially TRANSFER students - You WILL NOT be able to register if your “Appointment Status” shows “Vaccination Block.”  The Health Center will remove the block once all requirements are met.  Since you may have to contact your family doctor to get the required information, start now!  It takes 3-4 days to process your paperwork even after you submit it, so please submit your Immunization form NOW if you plan to register on time.   Go here for more information:  http://www.health.umd.edu/sites/default/files/ImmunizationRecordForm.pdf

==>  FINANCIAL BLOCKS
If you are blocked for financial reasons, you MUST go to the Bursar’s Office, room 1135 Lee Building to obtain clearance PRIOR to their registration appointment.  Advisors CANNOT override this block.  You can find out what you are being billed for here: http://www.testudo.umd.edu/Financials.html  and “click” on “Account Inquiry.”  You can also pay your bills online.  It often takes 3-4 days to process your payment even after you make it, so please pay your bills NOW if you plan to register on time.

==> FUNDAMENTAL STUDIES BLOCKS
Students who have attempted more than 30 credits (counting AP credits) and who have not yet completed ENGL 101 (or MATH) will have to register IN PERSON, either with me (Dr. W.) or at the Mitchell Building.  You will not be able to register via TESTUDO.

3.  ADVISING MEETINGS

To arrange your advising appointment, review your assigned advisor's contact information.  It is listed under your Concentration, on the ENSP webpage: www.ensp.umd.edu

To prepare for advising:
  • Please review your requirements.  You can access this information on the ENSP webpage here:  http://ensp.umd.edu/
  • Also, check Benchmark requirements and assess where you are in the process of completing them: http://www.ensp.umd.edu/advising/advising-policies/benchmarks
  • Develop a list of 5-7 possible classes to take.
  • If you have questions about Restricted Electives, especially interesting courses that relate to your concentration but which might not be listed on your advising checklist, speak to your advisor about them.
  • Prepare any additional questions you might have; if your advisor doesn't have the answer, perhaps s/he can suggest where to find it.
  • We hope you are having a fun and productive semester at Maryland.  We look forward to talking with you!
