Environmental Policy and Operations Division
Background: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)’s mission is to
ensure the safe and efficient use of the National Airspace System (NAS). With
more than 40,000 employees around the world, FAA is the largest agency within
the U.S. Department of Transportation. The FAA Office of Environment and Energy
(AEE) is an office within FAA Headquarters in Washington, DC. AEE develops,
recommends, and coordinates national aviation policy related to environment and
energy matters, including noise, emissions, climate, environmental
sustainability, and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The office is
a unique blend between policy and science, with employees who have advanced
degrees in policy or law and others with educational backgrounds in the physical
sciences, mathematics, and economics. The office regularly engages in meetings
at the White House, on the Hill, with the aviation stakeholder groups, and with
the Department of Transportation and other federal agencies. AEE employees have
a strong passion for the environment and a keen interest in aviation.
Internship Responsibilities and Requirements: The intern will work closely with Environmental Protection Specialists on a
variety of policy topics, including climate change, community involvement, and
NEPA. The intern will be exposed to the process of developing federal policy
and guidance, as well as the intricacies of responding to Executive and
Congressional requirements.
An ideal candidate will have a strong interest in and
understanding of environmental policy, will be eager to learn about a
fast-paced policy office, and will be excited about the idea of living and
working in Washington, D.C. The ideal intern will also possess strong writing
and communication skills.
