Federal Fellows Program and Global Fellows in Washington, DC

1st Priority Deadline: 7 April 2017

The Federal and Global Fellows programs at UMD prepare talented, diverse undergraduate students with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and experience necessary to excel in professional internships and pursue careers of influence and impact, in the public sector and in our increasingly globalized society. Both are yearlong programs that combine a fall academic seminar taught by industry experts and a spring internship. All students have access to one-on-one coaching, workshops, special events, guest speakers and DC trips regardless of program/concentration.

ENSP students have found these internships to be extremely helpful both as career development and networking opportunities.  These programs are also excellent for students who cannot afford to intern for free during the summer.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to come by the office to learn more about the seven fall academic seminar courses/concentrations (each 20-23 students). In your application, you will rank the seminar courses/concentrations in order of preference across the Federal and Global programs.

Application requirements:
  • Completed Online Application (preferred) or paper-based application (typed applications required).
  • Resume (can include but not limited to paid/unpaid work, volunteer experience, leadership activities, scholarships/awards, international study, computer and language skills including approximate proficiency level, etc.)
  • Personal Statement (2-3 pages)
  • Transcript (unofficial copies are fine)
  • Letter(s) of Recommendation (optional, but strongly encouraged if you are on the border of minimum requirements). The letter may arrive after you have submitted the application.

Students entering the program must meet the following minimum requirements:
  • 45 credits completed by the end of spring semester 2017.
  • Minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
  • Participants must commit for the full year. Students cannot participate in an academic year study abroad and the Fellows programs.

Please note: While staff work with students individually to guide them throughout the internship application process, students are ultimately responsible for securing their own internship placement for spring semester.

The online application method is preferred. But if using the paper-based application, applicants may email their completed application to federalfellows@umd.edu or globalfellowsdc@umd.edu with Subject Title: “2017-2018 Application.” Applicants are also welcome to drop off applications in-person, by snail mail, or by fax to the below address or fax number.
