Student Editorial Assistant - part-time
Maryland Sea Grant

Maryland Sea Grant seeks a part-time, student editorial assistant to join our communications team. We seek a student with a demonstrated interest in science and/or the environment and who has shown skills in creating content about these topics for print and/or multimedia. Duties will include one or more of the following, depending on the candidate's interests and experience:
  • Writing news articles primarily for our website and potentially also for our staff-written magazine, Chesapeake Quarterly (www.chesapeakequarterly.net). Topics would include news and feature articles about scientists working to preserve the Chesapeake Bay and their research findings. This writing requires explaining and summarizing technical information.
  • Conducting archival and other research in support of our videos and/or publications.
  • Helping to gather information for social media posts.
  • Helping our staff videographer to conduct video shoots in the field.
  • Independently taking photographs on and around the Chesapeake Bay.
  • Working to improve and expand our website.
Preferences (desired but not mandatory) include: demonstrated interest in and familiarity with the Chesapeake Bay and its surrounding communities; course work in the natural sciences, particularly environmental or marine science; a valid driver's license.

This is an hourly, paid, part-time position. Hours may be above 8 hours a week at times, by agreement between the student and Maryland Sea Grant. Work schedule is negotiable. The hourly rate is commensurate with experience and work samples. Graduate and undergraduate students will be considered. Students may apply to work during the summer as well as during academic semesters.

To apply, please e-mail application materials to brainard@mdsg.umd.edu. Please include: a cover letter describing your interest in the position; three work samples relevant to this job; and a resume/CV.  Official posting HERE.
