Two ENSP Majors Named 2017 Hollings Scholars

This year, four University of Maryland students have been awarded Earnest F. Hollings Scholarships by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Education. Of these four recipients, half of them are Environmental Science and Policy (ENSP) students!

The NOAA Hollings Scholarship Program provides a financial award of up to $9,500 annually for two years beginning in September 2017; and includes a full-time, 10-week, paid summer research internship at a NOAA facility the summer after junior year. This internship provides the Scholars with "hands-on" practical educational training experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management, and education activities.

ENSP’s 2017 Hollings Scholarship Awardees:
  • Logan Kline (Marine and Coastal Management). Currently Logan is an Interpretation and Environmental intern at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia. Logan is one of the founders of ENSPire, the Environmental Science and Policy Student Association, and currently serve as its president. This upcoming semester, she will also be a Peace Corps Student Ambassador and will serve as the undergraduate representative to the UMD Sustainability Council. Logan’s interest reside primarily in environmental education and coastal/wetland research, and she hopes to continue focusing in these areas post-graduation by pursuing opportunities in the Peace Corps and graduate school.
  • Anna Lowien (Environmental Geosciences and Restoration). Anna is a member of the Science & Global change program of College Park Scholars. She also assists with research in the lab of Dr. Michael Evans, associate professor of Geology. This summer, Anna will analyze cellulose from tropical trees in locations that often experience changes in rainfall during the phases of El Niño and La Niña. The results of this study will help understand if and how human-caused changes in atmospheric composition have impacted El Niño. (source)
