Summer or Fall/Spring Undergraduate Research Opportunity
Environmental Decision Support

Join a dynamic research team working at the interface of science and policy. Our research team works on environmental decision support and indicators, focused on how we can better support U.S. environmental and climate decisions and policies.

The work location is at the University of Maryland Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center, located in the Discovery District. Students just joining our team will gain experience in a range of research approaches and projects conducted by our team. With multi-semester commitments, and depending on your interests, projects can be customized to the interests and marketable skills that would be most beneficial for your career.

Potential duties and tasks include: coordination of teams, including scientists and Federal employees; event planning for workshops with leading experts in environmental policy; development of policy memos and presentations; identification, coding, and synthesis of climate decision support and indicators literature; development and analysis of indicator surveys and experiments; transcription and deductive coding of expert interviews, and editing and formatting scientific papers and policy documents.

Students who have worked with our team successfully have landed excellent summer internships and jobs based on detailed letters of recommendations and our extensive network within DC and the U.S.

Students who are interested in opportunities should review our research and submit the required information which includes: 1) a resume 2) one professional reference (name, email address, and phone number) 3) an email cover letter that describes your interest in the position, skills that you can bring to the team to support our research, and how it will support your career goals, and 4) schedule a 30-minute phone or in-person interview using https://kenney.youcanbook.me. Incomplete submissions or submissions with blatant writing mistakes (e.g., misspelled names, incorrect titles, grammatical errors) will not be considered and notified with a form email.

Applications for summer research opportunities must be submitted by May 10 at 1 pm.

For summer work, there is the ability to work part-time or full-time; schedules can be set up to flexibly account for summer classes and/or other commitments. The work will be in support of our ongoing indicators research with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Applications for fall 2018 or spring 2019 research opportunities will be taken on a rolling basis, but for best consideration please submit applications by July 15.

For work during the school year, you must be on-site at the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center for at least 8 hours per week during normal business hours (Monday through Friday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm ET). There is the opportunity to complete 2, 4-hour blocks in order to fulfill the 8-hour commitment. You must also be available in person for the team meeting once a week.
