UMD Wind Turbine Competition

Are you interested in ways to use the things you learn in school to combat global climate change?
Are you curious about how gigantic wind turbines work?
Do you want to learn about the future of alternative energy systems from cutting edge researchers?

We are starting a team to compete in a Department of Energy wind turbine competition this year, and want you on board.

It should be an extremely fun and interesting time--
We will construct a small prototype wind turbine and build a business plan around it. We will then travel to the NREL Laboratories in Colorado and test our turbine in a wind tunnel against other universities.

We are also starting a seminar series where you'll learn about the future of wind energy from top experts in industry and research.

Our chances look pretty good-- a few years ago, UMD won first place, but it takes serious work! It will require a combination of aerospace, mechanical, materials, electrical, and civil engineering, as well as economics, environmental policy and business students (and anyone with enough interest to show up).

Additionally, we have a few pet projects including setting up medium-size turbines around campus for power and education purposes.

It will be an incredible opportunity to gain experience and learn about a critical branch of engineering.

The first meeting will be held in the Fourney conference room (EGR 3164) on Wednesday Nov. 7 from 6-8pm.
