GIS and Planning Internships - Summer 2019
Harvard Forest Summer Research Program

The Harvard Forest in Massachusetts is looking for two qualified undergraduate interns for our 11-week paid summer internship. We are investigating how to apply the Wildlands and Woodlands conservation vision to a smaller geographic area. The students would be using GIS or regional planning skills to help us balance land conservation, development, agriculture, and economic interests in the Connecticut River Valley of Massachusetts. The students will be part of our well-respected internship program along with ~25 other students from all over the USA.

The interns will work with researchers at the Harvard Forest mosty but also interact with leaders of the Kestrel Land Trust and regional planners.

Position 1. Conservation GIS Intern
This position will be focused on using  Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to provide insights on the region’s conservation history, recent landcover changes, population and potential future changes, and--working with experts--help identify areas most suitable for forests, farms, and responsible
development. Applicants should be interested in land protection and have experience with, or have a strong motivation to learn, GIS and have good analytic skills.

Position 2. Regional Planning Intern
This position will focus on using planning documents from community to regional scales and social, demographic and economic data to summarize existing frameworks for action and to provide detailed characterization of the Connecticut River Valley’s economic, demographic, and cultural variation. The  student will be involved in developing a coordinated regional plan in collaboration with mentors and NGO partners. Applicants should have experience or coursework in regional planning, and an interest in land protection,  agriculture, and urban issues
