UMD Entomology Insect Evolutionary Genomics Lab
The Fritz lab in the Department of Entomology is recruiting an undergraduate summer research assistant. Our lab focuses on the ecology and evolutionary genomics of insects. This student would be primarily involved in a project exploring the ways that ecological features on the landscape influence gene flow and behavior in Culex pipiens mosquitoes, a primary vector of West Nile Virus. Opportunities to participate in other projects in the lab may also be available as time permits.
Primary responsibilities will include trapping and collecting mosquitoes in the field, mosquito identification and rearing, and laboratory experiments, including DNA isolation and PCR. There will be a strong field component to this research and the assistant will likely experience inclement weather, dirty conditions, and some lifting and moving of heavy objects may be required. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and be willing and able to drive a University vehicle in Maryland and Washington, DC. Training on all aspects of the job, including lab and field safety, will be provided.
The ideal applicant will have a positive attitude, attention to detail, and be self-motivated. This is a full time position through the summer, and opportunities to continue through the academic year are available, dependent on performance.
