Explore Career Opportunities with APHIS

There are TWO exciting ways to learn about and engage with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS) this semester, Intern For a Day and a Career Shuttle to their Riverdale Office.

If you’re interested in the humane treatment of animals, keeping animals and plants healthy, working with wildlife, being on the cutting edge of biotechnology, or taking part in global trade negotiations, APHIS has a place for you. Or, if you have skills in writing, editing, information technology, math, business management, training and development, or human resources, there’s a place for you, too. View these short descriptions to learn more about APHIS’ operational program units, management units, and offices.

INTERN FOR A DAY
Intern for a Day (IFAD) connects undergraduate students with professionals for one day job shadowing experiences. USDA APHIS will be participating in IFAD and will offer over 30 opportunities for UMD students to connect with their employees.

IFAD hosts work in the areas of:
  • Animal Health
  • Animal Welfare
  • Communications
  • Economics
  • Emergency Response Management
  • Entomology
  • Environmental Science
  • Government and Politics
  • Human Resources
  • International Trade (import & export)
  • Law
  • Management
  • Plant Health

To participate in IFAD, students must attend one mandatory orientation session to learn about the application, host matching process, and student expectations for shadowing. Follow the links below to RSVP for an orientation date that works best for your schedule. To learn more about Intern For a Day, visit go.umd.edu/ifad

CAREER SHUTTLE
The University Career Center will host a career shuttle to visit USDA APHIS at their Riverdale office on Friday, October 18, 2019 from 9am to 12:30 pm.

The visit will provide an overview of APHIS, a tour of their emergency operations facility, and small-group discussions with staff and alumni about employment opportunities. APHIS staff members will also lead an exercise to help you develop an “elevator pitch” about your career aspirations, which is useful for job interviews.

This career shuttle is open to all UMD students in all majors interested in exploring careers within animal health and welfare, plant health and protection, environmental policy, and international trade to name a few. The agency also hires communications majors, business majors, economists and IT specialists.

To learn more and to RSVP for the shuttle, visit https://go.umd.edu/cs19usda. Space is limited to RSVP today!
