Internships & Peer Advisors- UMD Office of Sustainability

Use your skills to create a more Sustainable UMD!


The Office of Sustainability Student Internship Program provides opportunities for experiential learning, leadership, and professional development while making a positive and tangible impact within the University of Maryland and College Park communities. In addition to internship opportunities hosted in the Office of Sustainability, we also advertise opportunities for sustainability-related partners across the region. Current opportunities are listed below:

Sustainable Communications Internship
Are you interested in using your skills in communications, journalism, public relations, or graphic/web design to inform UMD about sustainability? The Office of Sustainability is seeking interns to manage social media, write stories, create newsletters, and explore innovative methods of visual storytelling. The total time commitment is 10 hours per week. This internship will be fully online for the Fall 2020 semester.

Sustainability Advisors (Peer-Educators)
Are you interested in teaching other students about sustainability? The Office of Sustainability is seeking Sustainability Advisors to teach freshmen about sustainability and ways to get involved with sustainability initiatives on campus. Sustainability Advisors visit UNIV 100, HONR 100, Scholars Colloquium, and other first-year seminar classes to teach a 60-minute lesson. You would receive training in September and then teach the lesson to classes throughout October and November based on your availability. The total time commitment is 15-20 hours over three months. This program - including training and teaching sessions - will probably be fully online for the Fall 2020 semester.

To Apply: Make a short (1-2 minute) video of yourself explaining why you want to be a Sustainability Advisor, what courses you’ve taken that have increased your understanding of sustainability concepts, and if you are involved with sustainability-related clubs/projects on or off campus. Send your video to Mark Stewart, Sustainability Manager, at stewartm@umd.edu.

Prerequisites: Advisors must be current University of Maryland graduate or undergraduate students with at least sophomore standing. A minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA is recommended. Advisors are expected to have a strong interest in sustainability, a professional work ethic, and a desire to help others adopt sustainable practices. Students in all majors are encouraged to apply.

SustainableUMD Advocacy & Engagement Internship
Advocacy and Engagement Interns are a small team of selected UMD students that promote University of Maryland’s numerous sustainability initiatives and programs in the areas of social responsibility and environmental sustainability. Interns will serve as peer educators who learn and practice skills as environmental change agents. These interns engage peers in residential, commuter, academic, and extracurricular settings about environmental solutions in order to empower them to commit to environmentally conscious choices. Interns will assist in running SustainableUMD outreach programs to promote behavior change such as the Green Terp Program, Green Chapter Program, and Green Office Program. Students’ will develop knowledge and skills to successfully communicate sustainability, facilitate interactive dialogues, increase overall awareness of environmental initiatives, ways to affect individual and group change on campus, and promote a culture of environmental stewardship within the UMD community.

SustainableUMD Measurement and Assessment Internship
Are you interested in exploring qualitative and quantitative sustainability data? As a Measurement and Assessment intern in the Office of Sustainability, you will have the opportunity to create data sets, learn and practice data analysis skills, and create visual data stories. You will support efforts to report on the University’s sustainability initiatives, including the AASHE STARS Report, the Greenhouse Gas Inventory, and the SustainableUMD Progress Report. Through these projects, you will have opportunities to network with professionals in a variety of sustainability-related fields. The total time commitment is 10 hours per week. This internship will likely be fully online for Fall 2020.

If you have samples of data analysis work (visualizations, data-intensive reports (1-2 pages max) or other examples), provide them with your application. Include in your cover letter or resume any sustainability fields of interest, courses you’ve taken that have increased your understanding of data or sustainability concepts, and any data skills you would like to learn or practice over the course of the internship.

Institute for Sustainable Development Fall 2020 Internship
The mission of the Institute for Sustainable Development is to help communities and businesses to survive and thrive for the long-term and to build a more resilient future for all. ISD researchers will focus on one or more of the following key recovery and resilience categories:
  • Community planning and capacity building
  • Natural and cultural resources
  • Housing
  • Health and Social Services
  • Economy and Small Business
  • Critical Infrastructure Systems
  • International development and advances in each of the six categories listed above
Successful applicants will:
Have background and interest in one or more of the research categories listed above
Conduct research into resources for resilience and recovery, various communities and regions, and programs available to promote economic resilience
Assist with database management and administrative tasks related to sustainability and community economic recovery, resilience, and empowerment
Support ISD virtual events, workshops, training sessions and seminars n Support disaster recovery and community economic development projects and partnerships along with ISD senior advisors and experts
Develop business cases for ISD and community-based projects Regardless of project, interns are expected to support convenings (conference calls and webinars until in-person convening resumes), develop and maintain ISD contacts and databases, and attend relevant virtual briefings and events on behalf of ISD.
Interns will be asked to present findings on one of ISD’s regularly scheduled Friday webinars.

Qualifications: Requirements include research experience in an academic or professional setting, familiarity with Microsoft Office, and willingness to learn programs such as Mailchimp, Wix sites, and other forums Successful candidates tend to be courteous, self-motivated, team-oriented, capable multi-taskers, who are conscientious about details, and willing to help out on a range of issues and projects.
