Join UMD's New Chapter of The American Fisheries Society

A few graduate students at our lab have restarted the American Fisheries Society student chapter at UMD and we are in the process of recruiting undergrad and graduate students, as well as faculty/staff that may be interested in participating in our monthly meetings. Our subunit offers many benefits including fisheries networking opportunities, seminars by fisheries professionals or students, paper discussions, and volunteer opportunities (when safe).

I’m Samara, a student representative from the University of Maryland American Fisheries Society Student Subunit. We are a student-led, student-focused group affiliated with the American Fisheries Society, the world’s oldest and largest organization dedicated to strengthening the fisheries profession, advancing fisheries science, and conserving fisheries resources. We would like to offer membership to any interested graduate or undergraduate students. Faculty and research technicians are also welcome to attend our meetings if interested!

Benefits to joining include connection to a statewide network of young scientists interested in a wide array of fisheries-related topics. Our subunit covers the University of Maryland College Park, the five campuses of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Sciences, and Maryland Sea Grant College. We hold regular meetings in which we discuss relevant topics and careers in the fisheries science through scientific article discussions, guest lecturers, and webinars.

Membership to our student subunit and the American Fisheries Society also brings great networking opportunities with both established fisheries professionals, students, and local stakeholders. This can be great for undergraduates looking to continue into a graduate degree in fisheries research, management, or policy. We also organize community volunteering opportunities from our home campus in Solomons, Calvert County, and hope to expand our outreach activities to other regions of Maryland.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or if you are interested in attending our next meeting. I can be reached by email at snehemiah@umces.edu.

Best wishes,
