Attention first-year students: register for Grand Challenges of Our Time - UNIV110

The University of Maryland is offering you the opportunity to participate in a special one-credit course taught by University President Darryll J. Pines. Grand Challenges of Our Time: UNIV110 will engage a limited number of first-year students in discussions about the COVID-19 pandemic, Black Lives Matter, social unrest, climate change and civic engagement—all important issues that President Pines wants to discuss with you and other selected students in this new course.

This one-credit class will meet twice per week from September 20 to November 10, 2021.

On Mondays, from 4:00 to 5:15 p.m., President Pines will lead the class with the help of national and campus experts.

During the second weekly meeting on Wednesday afternoons, you will have a chance to connect with other first-year Terps in small discussion groups. Led by University of Maryland staff and faculty, you will investigate today’s issues together.

Not many freshmen get the chance to take a class taught by their university president, but as President Pines says, “Recent events have presented unprecedented challenges, but they also provide a meaningful chance to hear one another’s stories and to investigate important issues together.”

If you’re already registered for UNIV100 or any other one-credit class, you may still participate in Grand Challenges!

Students may sign up for the course during their advising sessions in orientation. If you’ve already registered for classes, please contact your academic advisor. Please feel free to email me with any questions at grandchallenges@umd.edu.
