NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office - Summer 2023 Internships

Each summer, the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office and Chesapeake Research Consortium team up to offer several paid summer internships primarily for college students. In summer 2023, the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office will offer five internships covering a range of Chesapeake Bay science, policy and education efforts. Each paid internship will run 12 weeks (mid-May through mid-August). They are intended for students who will be entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year of college study.

Applications are due February 20, 2023.

We invite interested students to learn more about these internship opportunities and how to apply by visiting the NCBO internship webpage.

Below are some brief descriptions of each of the internship programs and corresponding opportunities.

NCBO Supports interns through two different programs, The Chesapeake-Student Recruitment, Early Advisement and Mentoring and NOAA Chesapeake Bay Summer Internship Program.

The Chesapeake-Student Recruitment, Early Advisement and Mentoring (C-StREAM) Program is for college students who identify as people of color and/or who are first-generation college students. Learn more about the C-StREAM program and application process

We will host two interns through this program in summer 2023. We are still finalizing the position descriptions for these opportunities. The deadline for application will be February 21, 2023. The internship opportunities will focus on:

  • Community Partnerships  This intern will assist with strengthening relationships and collaboration between NOAA and Indigenous communities. They will contribute to the development of tribal resource guides. These guides will provide accessible information about NOAA resources and funding opportunities, especially in the Middle Peninsula of Virginia. This will be a hybrid position, with some virtual work and some in-person work, including travel to rural coastal areas of Virginia (southeast of Richmond).

  • Habitat Science This intern will help our field team collect fish biodiversity data in support of the Poplar Island restoration project. Much of this work is conducted on or from boats. The intern will use various methods to collect fish; with this data, the intern will quantify fish species composition and link it with habitat features. This in-person internship will be based out of Oxford, Maryland.

The NOAA Chesapeake Bay Summer Internship Program lets college students work and learn about science, policy, and education programming. Learn more about the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Summer Internship Program and application process. We will host three interns through this program in summer 2023. The application deadline is February 21, 2023. Here are the internship opportunities:

  • Field Technician This intern will work with our field team, supporting operations on the water and on land. The intern will help operate and maintain a newly deployed dissolved oxygen monitoring system and the Chesapeake Bay Interpretive Buoy System. They will assist in implementing a new way to assess the health of restoration projects. This is an in-person position based out of Annapolis or Oxford, Maryland.

  • Climate Change Education This intern will help develop and implement environmental literacy programs focused on climate change. This will include identifying and analyzing interdisciplinary climate change curriculum and supporting professional development programs. This can be a hybrid (virtual and in-person) or completely in-person opportunity. In-person elements will be in Oxford, Maryland.

  • Climate Change and Fish Habitat This intern will help synthesize scientific information related to climate and will work with researchers and stakeholders on tracking marine heat waves. This will be a hybrid internship, with the intern working in the office 1-2 days each week and virtually the other days. In-person days will be in Annapolis, Maryland.

In all of our internship programming we are committed to supporting a diverse and inclusive science-oriented workforce. We highly encourage applicants from historically black colleges and universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, and tribal colleges and universities.
