Undergraduate Student Research Assistant in Environmental Quality - beginning summer 2023

The Nutrient Management and Water Quality group in the Department of Environmental Science and Technology (go.umd.edu/Toor) is looking to hire a part-time (10-20 hours/week) Undergraduate Research Assistant for conducting research on the behavior of nutrients in agricultural soils. Some current research in the group includes stormwater sampling from edge of field catchments using novel tools and technologies to protect water quality in the Chesapeake Bay, measurement of phosphorus forms and availability from biosolids-amended soils, and work on nitrogen loss and availability to agricultural crops.

The student will process different water, organic amendments, plant, and soil samples, including filtration, drying, and grinding. They will also assist with analyses such as pH, EC, particle size analysis, and various chemical extractions. The student would also be responsible for washing laboratory equipment and keeping the laboratory environment clean. There will be opportunities to engage in field work across the state, traveling to farm sites with other teammates to collect soil and water samples. The student must be independent, multi-tasker, and comfortable working with laboratory equipment and performing various activities in the laboratory.

Previous lab experience is preferred but not required to apply. The student must show a demonstrated work ethic, attention to detail, a willingness to learn, and stick to a punctual laboratory work schedule. Priority will be given to upperclassmen (juniors and seniors) who have demonstrated an excellent understanding of chemistry principles and laboratory methods, and who plan on holding this position for at least one full year

Pay rate will start at $15/hour. There is a possibility of pay increases with experienced gains. Opportunities include professional development with mentoring from graduate students, post-docs, and Dr. Toor. The student will be supervised by Emileigh Lucas, a PhD student and Faculty Specialist in the group, and Dr. Fajun Sun, the laboratory manager. Further, experience in data analysis and project management are expected to be gained through this position.
