Intern for a Day: Now Open

Explore potential career paths and opportunities through Intern for a Day!
The University Career Center's popular Intern for a Day program connects UMD students with alumni, parents, and employers for in-person job shadowing or virtual informational interviewing experiences to explore potential career fields. After participating in a mandatory orientation and completing an application, University Career Center staff match you with an employer of interest for a half- or full-day job shadowing experience or a virtual informational interview.

That sounds interesting, but is Intern for a Day for me?
If you are an undergraduate UMD student, then yes! Intern for a Day is available to all undergraduate students in all majors and all levels. It is meant to be an opportunity for you to meet with professionals who work in a job, industry/field, company, etc. of interest so you can learn more. Maybe you're wondering what career paths exist for you or maybe you want to explore a specific career path that you have questions about. Intern for a Day is especially recommended for you if you might not have much previous experience in the area that you hope to explore.

What do I need to do to participate?
  1. Complete the online, self-paced, mandatory orientation process between Monday, September 11 and Sunday, October 1 at 11:59pm. You can enroll in the online orientation at go.umd.edu/ifad or by clicking here.
  2. Review the list of almost 200 hosts that are participating to see who you could shadow in-person or host a virtual informational interview with. The list of hosts is now available at go.umd.edu/ifad or by clicking here.
  3. Complete the mandatory orientation on ELMS by Sunday, October 1 at 11:59pm to receive the Intern for a Day Fall 2023 application by the end of the day on October 2 at the email address listed in your ELMS account profile.
  4. Complete the brief application by Sunday, October 8 at 11:59pm.
And that's it!
After you complete and submit your application, University Career Center staff engage in a matching process and will be in touch to connect you with the host that you've been matched with. From there, it will be up to you to schedule a time and date to meet with your host, either in-person or virtual.

Please note: Depending on program demand, we may not be able to match everyone who applies with a host, but we do our very best! Either way, we will be in touch about the results of the matching process.
