Study Abroad in Italy this summer with ENSP's Dr. Caroline Boules!

Take courses at The Umbra Institute during Summer Session 2 in Perugia, Italy!

The application period ends on March 1, 2024.

In ANTH/GEOG 308, students will explore the role Urban Agriculture has in contributing to sustainable and equitable food systems, focusing on comparisons between the US and Italy. You will study the similarities and differences of the ecological, social, political, and economic policies and systems that shape Urban Agriculture. By studying in Perugia, you will get hands-on experience with the Urban Agricultural practices of central Italy! In addition to ANTH-GEOG308, students can also enroll in another course offered by the Umbra Institute during SummerSession 2.

The course is through the MD-in-Perugia program, and will be offered in Summer Session II (6/28 - 7/27). The application for the program is now open through March 1. You can apply and see additional information including fees here:

It's about $4200 for tuition and housing, and although that's a lot of money, it's actually one of the least expensive ways you could travel for such a long period of time! You would be able to take additional courses while there for just a small additional fee, and those options are listed here in the Summer Session 2 course listings.

You can see the listing for my course here, and I can share a syllabus if anyone would like to see it:

Also here's some additional information about life at Umbra:
  • online Student Life Guide, with links to tips written by former Umbra students.
  • TikTok and Instagram
  • student-led Podcast or blog for exciting updates about life in Italy. Current and former students regularly contribute to these platforms to share their experiences with those considering Perugia as their study-abroad destination.
ANTH-GEOG 308 will transfer back to UMD as ENSP 389.
