This is part of a larger project focused on food access, food insecurity and food waste, but the assistant will be working closely with Dr. Caroline Boules on her piece of the puzzle.
Project Objectives:
Our NourishNet team is creating an integrated food ecosystem to replace the linear, top-down approach through launching software apps linked with a sensor that provide real-time information and two-way communication within the food insecurity space. The new connectivity is accompanied by assurance of the freshness of donated food, which provides the missing links between consumers, donors, food pantries, and institutions. We are developing an app called FoodLoops that will connect stakeholders in the food donation system, from producers, distributors and consumers who are experiencing food insecurity. This part of the project will be focused on testing the app with different stakeholders, with a specific emphasis on urban farmers, as well as developing education and outreach materials for various stakeholders in the food system.
Responsibilities
• Conduct literature reviews, including finding and synthesizing relevant literature on urban agriculture, food security, food waste, and related topics.
• Organize files in Google Drive
• Work with urban farmers in the county to test the FoodLoops App and collect feedback on their interaction and experiences with the app
• Aid in survey design, distribution and survey data analysis
• Aid in developing guides for interviews and focus groups
• Schedule interviews and focus groups with various stakeholders in PG County
• Conduct virtual qualitative interviews & focus groups with urban growers & organizations in PG County
• Transcribe qualitative interviews and focus groups
• Interpret qualitative interview data using content analysis methods
• Synthesize and summarize findings, including writing reports and academic journal articles

• Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive
Preferred Skills and Qualifications
• Experience conducting surveys, interviews or focus groups
• Experience working directly with communities who may be experiencing food insecurity
• Interest or experience with food systems, urban agriculture and food security work a plus
• Working knowledge of Spanish
Hours and Compensation:
• Expected commitment: average 20 hours/week from start through December 2024 with a possibility for extension (might be less during semesters and more during the summer months).
• Pay: $16/hour
