Seeking Asian American Women for Study

The Counseling Psychology program at the University of Maryland is recruiting for a research study on the impact of sexual violence experienced by Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) women. We hope to better understand the impact of these experiences, particularly in relation to harmful stereotypes of Asian American women, stigma of sexual violence, and sexism.

In the study, we use Gavey’s (2014) definition of sexual violence as an umbrella term that describes unwanted sexual experiences that are coerced, forced, or imposed. It includes experiences such as sexual assault, sexual abuse, rape, attempted rape, sexual coercion, and unwanted touching.

To be eligible to participate in the study, you must:

1) Be 18 years or older
2) Identify as a cisgender woman
3) Identify as a 1.5 or 2nd generation Asian American
4) Have experienced sexual violence at the age of 18 or older

The study will involve a 60–90 minute interview over Zoom or in-person in a confidential office on campus. Participants will not be required to disclose or describe the details of how the sexual violence occurred. Questions will be asked about your experiences with stereotypes, sexism, the impact of sexual violence, and healing. Your responses will be anonymous and confidential. Participants will receive a $30 Amazon gift cardIf you would like to participate in the study, please complete the eligibility survey here: https://tinyurl.com/APIDAvoices

We recognize the personal investment that this study requires. We hope the study can amplify the voices of APIDA women, raise awareness of sexual violence, and inform mental health services for APIDA survivors.
