Forest Entomology and Ecology of Invasive Species
Undergraduate Research Assistant – Summer 2024
Emerald ash borer (EAB) is an invasive wood boring beetle now established in 35 states in the United States alone. Between 2009-2019 this pest caused an estimated $25 billion in damage in urban forests alone. This project involves work in the field, greenhouse, and laboratory to study the ecological impact of EAB, the use of biological control, and community analysis of ash forests in Maryland forests.
The Gruner lab is looking for a dynamic part-time undergraduate research assistant to join our team in the summer of 2024. Hours would be flexible, but with a target of around 30 hours/week. Ideally, the candidate will be a rising junior or senior who would continue work in the Fall with hours reduced to 8-12/week. Wages begin at $15/hour.
Duties include:
• Assist with field and lab experiments (monitoring for biocontrol/sorting collected samples)
• Maintain insect colonies and greenhouse stock
• Record and organize experimental and observational data
• Assisting in sampling, organization, cataloguing, and identification of insect specimens
• Communicate and coordinate with lab members and stakeholders
Requirements:
• Ability to work in adverse field conditions during the winter and summer
• Valid Maryland driver’s license with a clean record
• Reliable means of transportation to campus
• Lift at least 30lbs and hike several miles on uneven or waterlogged terrain
• Comfortable with computer applications, including Excel; knowledge of R is a plus
• Enthusiasm and curiosity for scientific discovery
Coursework and experience in ecology and entomology, with insect and plant identification skills, are
plusses.
