Carnegie Junior Fellows Program - Int'l Affairs Think Tank Fellowship

Each year the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington DC offers approx. 10-12 one-year paid junior fellowships to highly qualified graduating seniors and alumni who have graduated during the past academic year. Carnegie Junior Fellows provide research assistance to senior researchers working on the Carnegie Endowment's on-going and special research programs. Competitive candidates will have strong academic, research, internship and language skills (where applicable) aligned with the specific program areas listed below.

Here is the list of opportunities for the 2025-26 Junior Fellows Program:


2025-2026 Programs or Projects and Requirements (Please note that any listed requirements including language proficiency, are firm.)

1) Democracy, Conflict, and Governance  

2) American Statecraft   

3) Nuclear Policy  

4) Technology and International Affairs – Strong writing skills and research skills are essential.   

5) Middle East – Strong reading fluency and the ability to perform academic as well as on-line research in Arabic is essential. Strong background in Middle East politics and/or history is a huge plus.  

6) International Security and Political Economy [to work with the International Security and South Asia Programs] – Quantitative data analysis and GIS skills are required. A strong mathematical background is a plus. An academic background in international relations theory or international political economy along with an interest in military issues is essential.  

7) Asia Program – Mandarin Chinese language skills, particularly reading comprehension, are essential. 

8) Russia and Eurasia – Excellent Russian and/or Ukrainian reading skills required.  

9) Africa Program  

10) Global Order and Institutions  

11) Sustainability, Climate and Geopolitics - Data skills (such as helping create graphs or tables for Carnegie publications) are a plus. Applicants should have completed coursework related to sustainability and climate issues.  A foreign language or regional expertise is a plus—the program seeks to bring an international perspective into US debates on climate change. 
12) Europe - Fluency and the ability to perform research in a European language other than English are a plus. Background knowledge on European politics is essential.  

 

Junior Fellows will spend one year (beginning August 1st, 2025) at the Carnegie Endowment in Washington, DC. Positions are full-time and include a salary and benefits package (see details further below). Carnegie Junior Fellows are selected through a highly competitive process from a pool of nominees from close to 300 colleges.


ELIGIBILITY: All nationalities eligible; Current Seniors AND alumni who graduated in the 2023-24 academic year; minimum 3.7 GPA recommended;  strong experiences directly related to one or more of the 2025-26 project areas (see above). 

 

IMPORTANT: Applicants for the Carnegie Junior Fellows Program must be nominated by their University.  The University of Maryland, College Park can nominate two (2) students for the national competition.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: The monthly salary is $4000 ($48,000 annually) subject to federal, state and local taxes. A generous benefits package is provided, including medical, dental and life insurance as well as vacation leave. Junior Fellows are responsible for their own housing arrangements.
