U.S. Department of the Interior: Semester of Service Opportunities

The U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) is excited to share Semester of Service (SOS) opportunities for students interested in gaining hands-on experience while contributing to meaningful projects that support our nation’s public lands, natural and cultural resources, wildlife conservation, and communities.
SOS is a government-wide, unpaid student volunteer program that allows eligible students to apply their academic knowledge, develop professional skills, receive mentorship, and explore potential careers in federal public service. Students must be enrolled at least half-time in a qualifying educational institution, be in good academic standing, and commit to a minimum of 90 days of service.  Please see attached flyers.
Our current DOI Projects span a variety of disciplines and interests, including:
  • Environmental Science & Natural Resources: Habitat restoration, ecological monitoring, invasive species management, and post-fire restoration.
  • STEM, GIS & Data Analysis: GIS mapping, energy geochemistry, sea turtle research, and environmental data analysis.
  • Public Policy & Administration: NEPA policy analysis, business process automation, and program modernization.
  • History, Museums & Cultural Resources: Museum collections, archival digitization, and historical research.
  • Communications & Community Engagement: Science communications, graphic design, and public outreach.
  • Law Enforcement & Public Service: Law enforcement research, resource protection, and specialized training development.
Projects support the work of DOI bureaus and offices. Opportunities are available in a variety of formats, including in-person, remote, and hybrid, depending on the project.
Please share these opportunities with students, faculty, and academic departments to help spread the word.
