Through archaeological investigations, archival research, and interviews with local historians of the Skibbereen Heritage Center and members of the community, you will receive extensive and intensive experience learning the importance and meaning of material culture as it relates to the larger study of the Irish Diaspora, socio-cultural change in Ireland over time, as well as form the foundation for a comparable database to model and interpret the diverse worlds and experiences of Irish immigrants internationally. This research is an important move forward in modeling the diversity of material identities in Ireland and creating a database that will be significant not only to Ireland, but also to understanding material and social continuity and change in Irish diasporic communities worldwide.

  ASPIRE Program Information: The Interior Business Center is looking for current college students interested in learning about federal government acquisitions to participate in a paid, hands-on, immersive student intern program called ASPIRE. As an ASPIRE intern, you will join a cohort of other interns, gaining exposure to a community of acquisition professionals, who share a passion for serving the federal government and teaching others key acquisition concepts.   Employment Timeframe:  Depending on the speed of the hiring paperwork, the approximate start date is January 2025. Employment can continue (if the project manager and the student agree) until December 2025. The exact end date will be determined by funding levels and the amount of work left after the bulk of the mapping is completed. The project manager will check in at the end of every semester to determine if the student wants to continue working.  Project:  Manual mapping of cropland field burning using various Earth Observation datasets. Candidates are required to 1)  vectorize cropland field boundaries, 2) visually interpret cropland field conditions using a combination of commercial high-resolution (Planet), Sentinel-2, and Landsat-8 imagery, and 3) record pertinent information for each field with the shapefile attribute table.
