UMD BSOS Summer Research Initiative (SRI) Summer Research Initiative to Increase Diversity This program provides rising juniors and seniors an opportunity to increase their interest in research careers in the social and behavioral sciences, develop research skills, and learn about doctoral training with the goal of encouraging students to pursue doctoral degrees in the social and behavioral sciences. The program has a special emphasis on population groups underrepresented in these fields (i.e., African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders). Summer 2019 Undergrad Research on Chesapeake Bay (REU) Deadline : Feb. 15 Are you looking for a summer research internship studying ocean, coastal or environmental science? I invite you to check out the Maryland Sea Grant Summer REU program. We bring upper-level undergraduate students to the Chesapeake Bay to conduct individual research projects with a scientist-mentor at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. We select undergrads in many disciplines, including engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, ecology and marine and environmental science. Summer Undergraduate Internship Opportunities Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve Otter Point Creek, located in Abingdon MD, as well as Jug Bay Wetland Sanctuary in Lothian are looking for summer research interns, one to be located at OPC, and two at JBWS. Both internships are paid. Both internships will be located at the Reserve, and can be tailored to numerous topics. Jug Bay interns will work closely with JB staff, and the Otter Point Creek intern will work with onsite staff and CBNERR mentors. Volunteer with Terps for Change   As the spring semester starts up, we want to remind you about a service-learning opportunity available with the Terps for Change Program in the LCSL office at STAMP. This is a great way to gain volunteer experience and build a community of like-minded Terps!   Terps for Change is a semester long commitment for students interested in learning more about social change and social justice while volunteering in their local community! There is a wide array of community service sites, ranging from working to remove invasive species to tutoring local high school students, and more. Capitol Hill Days 2019 Capitol Hill Days 2019 advocacy weekend will be held from March 29th-April 1st, 2019 in Washington, D.C. The weekend includes informational sessions on international reproductive health issues and an interactive advocacy training, which will prepare participants for a day of lobbying on Capitol Hill. Capitol Hill Days is open to anyone, and there is no registration fee. Students are eligible to apply for a travel and housing stipend to cover their costs for the weekend. For graduating seniors! Chesapeake Conservation Corps Looking to launch your environmental career? Or know a young person who is? Soon-to-be college grads can gain vital green jobs skills and build a network of connections in the environmental field through the Chesapeake Conservation Corps program. This one-year term of paid service places young adults (ages 18-25) with nonprofits or government agencies to work full-time in the environmental field in the Chesapeake watershed. Throughout the year this program provides hands-on professional and leadership experience through on-the-ground work leading and assisting with projects and programs, extensive trainings, and other service-learning opportunities including grant writing. This initiative is supported by the Trust, BGE an Exelon Company, the National Park Service and the state of Maryland. GIS and Planning Internships - Summer 2019 Harvard Forest Summer Research Program   The Harvard Forest in Massachusetts is looking for two qualified undergraduate interns for our 11-week paid summer internship. We are investigating how to apply the Wildlands and Woodlands conservation vision to a smaller geographic area. The students would be using GIS or regional planning skills to help us balance land conservation, development, agriculture, and economic interests in the Connecticut River Valley of Massachusetts. Held annually since 2011, the program boasts over 400 alumni. During weekdays, SISE'ers participate in high-level talks, visit energy and sustainability sites, and network. LAKES Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) The LAKES REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program through the University of Wisconsin-Stout is looking to recruit students for the summer! The topic of the program is interdisciplinary research into sustainable watershed management. Students get a $4000 stipend for the 8-week program and a great research experience. The program is looking for students with interests in community-based watershed management, rural geography, agriculture, and land use, using mixed methods such as qualitative research and GIS. The research could include interviews w/land managers & conservationists, archival research into the history of land use, or GIS & modeling of erosion risks and sites for potential restoration.
