  MARYLAND CENTER FOR UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH 2017 Maryland Summer Scholars Program The Maryland Summer Scholars Program (MSS) provides an exciting opportunity for undergraduate students to spend the summer working closely with faculty mentors on ambitious research or artistic projects. Maryland Summer Scholars research may take place in College Park or anywhere in the US or abroad as required by the nature of the project.  For the summer of 2017, the program will provide awards of $3,000 to approximately 25 outstanding, competitively selected applicants. Summer research opportunity American Museum of Natural History The American Museum of Natural History hosts two summer National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduate Site grants - Research in Biology: Evolution and Systematics and research in Physical Sciences: Earth Sciences and Astrophysics. This year’s REU program will run from May 30 to August 4, 2017. Internship Sustainable Agriculture - USDA Technician & Internship Opportunity Dr. Mirsky (USDA-ARS Sustainable Agricultural Systems Laboratory; Beltsville, MD) conducts agro-ecological research in conventional and organic field crop production. Research focuses on evaluating cropping system sustainability including agronomic and environmental criteria. Experiments evaluate the role of cover crops and their integration into agro-ecosystems for soil, crop and, weed management. Student will spend their time during the fall/winter processing plant and soil samples and potentially performing plant tissue, soil and greenhouse gas analysis. They bring upper-level undergraduate students to the Chesapeake Bay to conduct individual research projects with a scientist-mentor at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. They select undergrads in many disciplines, including engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, ecology and marine and environmental science. In particular, this program encourages students from colleges and universities where access to marine science and to research opportunities is limited and who are from groups traditionally underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and math. They believe bringing together students from many disciplines, backgrounds and parts of the country makes for a more interesting and educational summer experience.

Summer internship Environmental Health CONSERVE (COordinating Nontraditional Sustainable watER Use in Variable climatEs) is a Center of Excellence at the Nexus of Sustainable Water Reuse, Food, and Health. Our leading team of scientists and educators are investigating sources of nontraditional irrigation water that can provide safe, transformative on‐farm solutions for food crops and reduce the nation’s agricultural water challenges that are exacerbated by climate change. With projects located in the Mid-Atlantic and Southwest, we are looking for undergraduate student interns to assist us in our research and education efforts. 2017 Research Internships U.S. National Arboretum Description: The mission of the U.S. National Arboretum is to enhance the economic, environmental, and aesthetic value of ornamental plants through research, conservation, and display. Pending available funding, the Floral and Nursery Plants Research Unit may have several research internships available in 2017 in areas such as molecular biology, plant pathology, plant breeding, horticulture, and production. Interns will be located in Beltsville, MD or at the Arboretum in northeast Washington, DC. Interns are assigned to a particular area within the arboretum. Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program Applications for the Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program ( conservationscholars.ucsc.edu ) at the University of California Santa Cruz are open!  Each winter the program selects 20 early-undergraduate Scholars from around the country to participate in a two-year conservation mentorship program centered on the summers between academic years. Their goal is to serve students from all backgrounds, including groups traditionally underrepresented in conservation, who can contribute to diversifying, redefining, and strengthening efforts to protect land, wildlife and water. They admit college freshmen and sophomores, at a stage when they can support their undergraduate careers and their choices as they graduate. Internship Lacawac Sanctuary   The Lacawac Sanctuary is a non-profit biological field station, 545-acre nature preserve, and environmental education center located in NE Pennsylvania. Founded in 1966, the Lacawac Sanctuary has a long history of supporting ecological research, providing public access to preserved natural lands, and providing innovative environmental education programs. Due to its pristine, protected nature Lake Lacawac serves as “living laboratory,” thereby providing a baseline for ecological study.     The Lacawac Sanctuary and Biological Field Station seeks an undergraduate intern for Summer 2017. The student will work with the Director of Research and Education on various Pocono lake monitoring projects and assist with outreach activities. Student Contract/Field Technicians U.S. Geological Survey The U.S. Geological Survey’s Amphibian Research and Monitoring Initiative Northeast program will be hiring 2-4 student contractors/field technicians in 2017. Technicians will be hired for the spring & summer period (early March through July 2017). Technicians may have the possibility of extension for work during the 2017 fall field season (September through October) dependent on availability of funding. These technicians will conduct amphibian surveys in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, New Jersey and the District of Columbia. The technicians will work on a team that surveys for amphibians within National Parks and National Wildlife Refuges in the Mid-Atlantic region, including work in the mountains of Shenandoah National Park. Student Interns needed US Fish and Wildlife Service The US Fish and Wildlife Service's Branch of Foreign Species (BFS) is responsible for listing actions under the Endangered Species Act for foreign species. This includes adding species to, removing species from, and reclassifying species on the Federal List of Threatened and Endangered Wildlife and Plants. They are seeking several student interns this coming spring semester to join our team and assist with their workload. These are unpaid positions. Duties will include assistance in research and review of candidate species under the Endangered Species Act, administrative tasks, outreach assignments, and other projects/tasks that arise. Information Session US Fish and Wildlife Service Join the US Fish and Wildlife Service for an information session on December 6th at 5pm in the University Career Center Multipurpose Room, to learn about their Federal Wildlife Officer position. During the information session, they will present on how Federal Wildlife Officers protect our natural resources and answer questions about the position. This information session is open to any student that is interested in natural resources, wildlife, as well as law enforcement. They will be recruiting their next class of officers in January 2017, but also welcome students (undergraduate and masters level) who are not ready to apply but are interested in learning more.
