USDA- ARS-BARC Part-Time Field Techs/Interns Part-time field technician position(s) are available for a tick control study in Howard County, Maryland. Selected candidates will have the opportunity to collaborate with the United States Department of Agriculture and University of Maryland on a research project focused on the efficacy of IPM strategies against zoonotic pathogens. Technicians are expected to work a minimum of 20 hours per week, May-August with flexible start and end dates. Preference will be given to candidates that are available April-October. Field technicians will be responsible for assisting researchers with tasks including small mammal trapping, tick surveys, telemetry, and weekly maintenance of 4-Poster deer feeders in a suburban area. Work hours will typically consist of shifts 5am-12pm, 1pm-6pm, and occasionally 7pm-12am. Now accepting applications Law and Society minor The Law and Society Minor is an interdisciplinary and experiential approach to the study of law and its impact on society. This 18-credit, upper-level learning opportunity is designed to help students understand law, critically analyze it, and use it as an instrument of change. Students will be introduced to law and society scholarship through courses taught by University of Maryland’s faculty across a wide variety of departments and programs as well as law faculty from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. Coursework will challenge students’ assumptions about law and its function in society. It will encourage them to think creatively and critically about law’s place in society, and provide opportunities for them to create change. Paid Research Internships Smithsonian Environmental Research Center The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center's (SERC) Internship Program offers undergraduate and beginning graduate students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the fields of environmental research and public engagement. This program enables students to work on independent research projects under the direction of a SERC mentor. Interns projects span the range of research conducted at SERC, including environmental chemistry, marine and estuarine ecology, molecular ecology, and terrestrial ecology. Projects are also offered in public engagement, with opportunities in environmental education, citizen science, and science writing. Study Abroad in Bolivia   UMD is offering a new study abroad summer course to Bolivia: Global Health Lessons in Ecotourism and Community Health. We will be visiting indigeneous communities in the Bolivia amazon who are under serious environmental threat (e.g., plans for mega dams, poor placement and construction of Chinese bridge, illegal logging, gold mining etc.).
