Volunteers needed Environmental Ambassadors for Good Neighbor Day Environmentally aware volunteers are needed to serve as Environmental Ambassadors on Saturday, April 4th for the signature College Park volunteer event called Good Neighbor Day   This new role was just launched this year. Tiger Matters presentation Dr. Anish Andheria, Wildlife Conservation Trust Join the UMD Science Alumni Network on Monday, March 9, 2020 to learn about India's leading Tiger Conservation project from Dr. Anish Andheria. Dr. Andheria is the President of the Wildlife Conservation Trust (WCT), a not-for-profit, set up to preserve, protect and conserve wildlife and fight climate change. After completing his Ph.D. from Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, Dr. Andheria went on to pursue a Masters in Wildlife Biology and Conservation from the National Center for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bengaluru. He is a large carnivore specialist with immense knowledge on predator-prey relationships. This sculpture by Maris Polanco points toward the issue of plastic in the ocean and the dangers it presents for ocean wildlife. Floating in ocean tides, these not-so-ephemeral wisps of plastic resemble a favorite snack of many large sea creatures—jellyfish. The consequences are dire. Bat Internship opportunity Pittsburg State University, Missouri  Field assistance from 2-3 Interns is needed to assist MS student’s research studying the roosting ecology and occupancy of three species of bats (tricolored, Northern long-eared, and little brown) in the Missouri Ozarks. Responsibilities include assisting MS student in mist-net procedures to capture and radio-tag bats, use radio-telemetry to locate diurnal roosts, conduct emergence counts, and acoustic surveys. Additional responsibilities include performing vegetation surveys around acoustic and roost sites. Research will be conducted within public land in southeastern Missouri. Summer study abroad BSCI339N Natural History, Ecology, and Geology of Australia (3 credits) CMNS and College Park Scholars–Life Sciences invites you to join us for a 19-day educational adventure this summer (July 28–August 15) to explore the culture, geology, and natural history of Australia. The focus of this travel–study experience is the ecology, geology, and environment of the Australian deserts, tropical rainforests, and coral reefs. At each stop, we will discuss the lives of the Aboriginal peoples who settled these lands and their interactions with the environment as well as how they were subsequently affected by European colonial settlement. Faculty from the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences will provide expertise on the geology and biology of Australia along with the historical interplay between aboriginal and European cultures. Gills Club Scholarship Atlantic White Shark Conservancy COURSE Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML) is offering a course in Shark Biology & Conservation July 27 - August 10, 2020. The last 30 years have produced an explosion of new information on the biology of the approximately 1,000 living species of sharks, skates, rays, and chimaeras, which collectively make up the group Chondrichthyes. This course will cover advanced topics in the evolution, diversity, anatomy, functional morphology, physiology, sensory systems, behavior, reproduction, development, and conservation of cartilaginous fishes. The course is being taught by Gills Club co-founder, Dr. Heather Marshall. Nature Boardwalk Intern Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago The Nature Boardwalk intern will gain valuable hands-on experience by assisting the Urban Wildlife Institute in wildlife and habitat monitoring at the Nature Boardwalk, a natural wetland ecosystem managed by the zoo. Specifically, you will conduct fieldwork, including live-trapping turtles, monitoring the largest colony of state-endangered Black-crowned night herons in Illinois, camera-trapping for terrestrial mammals, and testing pond water quality. Accepting applications for 2020-2021 members Chesapeake Conservation Corps The Chesapeake Bay Trust is seeking applications for the Chesapeake Conservation Corps Program where young professionals can gain vital green jobs skills and build a network of connections in the environmental field. This one-year term of paid service places young adults (ages 18-25) with nonprofits or government agencies to work full-time in the environmental field in the Chesapeake watershed. Throughout the year this program provides hands-on professional and leadership experience through on-the-ground work leading and assisting environmental projects and programs, extensive trainings, and other opportunities including networking and grant writing.
