Invitation to Rachel Carson Living History Presentation

Dear Friend of Patuxent,   You are invited to a Rachel Carson Living History Presentation scheduled for Saturday, November 19, 2022, 2-4 pm, at the National Wildlife Visitor Center, 10901 Scarlet Tanager Loop, Laurel, MD 20708. This is a free public event that requires registration. Colleen portrays Rachel Carson and brings to life Carson’s research, personal life and legacy, and her connection to the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, now part of the Eastern Ecological Science Center at Patuxent Research Refuge. Light refreshments will be served.

U S Fish and Wildlife Refuge Operations Internships

Spring 2023 registration period

Registration appointments for Spring 2023 are as follows: Oct. 31 - Nov. 15 - Seniors and Juniors Nov. 16 - Dec. 7 - Sophomores and Freshmen   * Registration dates are set by the Office of the Registrar and cannot be changed by academic advisors.   Official classifications of undergraduate students are based on cumulative credits as follows: freshman, 0-29 credit hours; sophomore, 30-59 credit hours; junior, 60-89 credit hours; and senior, 90 or more credit hours Official UMD registration policies can be found HERE .  

Deadline to drop a course with a "W"- November 7

  The  deadline  to  drop  a course with a " W " is November 7, 2022. See full  drop  policy  HERE . HOW DO I KNOW I SHOULD  DROP  A COURSE? Is the coursework in the class so heavy, and/or the likelihood of passing it so slim, that it is taking away from other courses?   If the answer is “yes,” then it may be a good idea to  drop  the course. It is usually better to  drop  a course and earn A’s and B’s in 4 classes, than one B, 3 C’s and an F in 5 classes. Be honest with yourself.   Refer to your course syllabus to get a realistic idea regarding what percentage of your grade is already determined and how much improvement is mathematically possible.  Remember that what is “mathematically” possible may not be “realistically” possible. Speak to your instructor  to get his/her opinion. Hollings Scholarship in Environmental Science and Policy - Info Sessions Next Week

Attention   FIRST and SECOND YEAR STUDENTS pursuing environmentally related studies and career aims! Learn about the Hollings Scholarship! The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA)  Hollings Scholarship  is open to applicants who are  current SECOND-YEAR  students studying atmospheric and oceanic sciences, environmental engineering, environmental sciences and policy, or ANY major with a strong environmental focus or interest. Interested first year students are encouraged to learn about this opportunity to prepare for application next year.  The  Hollings Scholarship   provides two-year academic scholarships (up to a maximum of $9,500 per year) for full-time study, and a 10-week, full-time, paid internship position ($700/week)  the summer after  junior  year  at a NOAA facility. 47 Maryland students have won Hollings Scholarships in the past nine years! Udall Scholarship - Environmental Leadership

  Are you a  sophomore  or  junior  strongly committed to making a difference in environmental issues through your studies, community service, and career plans? Do you have an outstanding record of activism, leadership, and research on environmental issues? Do you have an excellent record of undergraduate studies, internships and/or research related to the environment?  Learn about the Udall Scholarship in Environmental Issues, a program that seeks to identify future environmental leaders in fields including public policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, and economics. Udall Scholars take part in a five-day conference in Tucson, Arizona where they meet with other Scholars, elected officials and environmental leaders. Scholars also gain access to a network of environmental policy professionals through the Udall Alumni listserv.   The  Maryland Summer Scholars Program (MSS)  provides opportunities for University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) undergraduates to spend much of the summer working closely with faculty mentors on ambitious research, scholarly, or artistic projects. The MSS program provides awards of $3,000 to approximately 25-30 undergraduates each summer.
