ENSP306 will be offered once again this coming spring semester! This course can satisfy our Applied Science and Policy requirement for ENSP.  Depending on your concentration (and faculty approval) it can also count as a Restricted Elective. TIME:  Monday/Wednesday from 2:00-3:15 ENSP306 - Fundamentals of Qualitative Research Methods for Environmental Studies An introduction to research design and methods, with an in-depth focus on qualitative research methods and application to environmental studies. Topics include: writing an appropriate research question, identifying relevant methods, submitting a proposal to the Institutional Review Board, choosing appropriate sampling approaches, conducting interviews, focus groups, ethnographies, analyzing textual data, and presenting qualitative results. New Spring 2021 course: ENSP370

The ENSP Program is thrilled to announce the newest course to our 300-level collection:   ENSP370: Principles of Environmental Justice - Theory and Practice Course Description: Explores the issue of environmental justice from the social science, policy, and legal perspectives. The course will begin with a theoretical foundation of environmental justice, and the historical, social and economic roots of environmental injustices and environmental racism. We will explore the different contexts within which environmental injustice manifests itself including domestic and international examples such as injustices in the food system, climate justice, environmental privilege, and urban environmental justice and pollution. We will study the ways in which people and communities have combated environmental injustices by looking at the history of the environmental justice movement, which was created to address the increasingly disproportionate impacts of environmental harms on low income population

Udall Scholarship in Environmental Issues

  Are you a  sophomore  or  junior  strongly committed to making a difference in environmental issues through your studies, community service, and career plans? Do you have an outstanding record of activism, leadership, and research on environmental issues? Do you have an excellent record of undergraduate studies, internships and/or research related to the environment?  Learn about the  Udall Scholarship in Environmental Issues , a program that seeks to identify future environmental leaders in fields including public policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, and economics. Udall Scholars take part in a five-day conference in Tucson, Arizona where they meet with other Scholars, elected officials and environmental leaders. Scholars also gain access to a network of environmental policy professionals through the Udall Alumni listserv. Two intern positions available with The Wildlife Society - apply by Nov. 10

  The Wildlife Society is currently accepting applications for two paid internships:  -  TWS Joe Burns Memorial Wildlife Policy Internship (one position) -  TWS Operations and Outreach Internship (one position)  Applications must be submitted by November 10, 2020. The internships will be remote and will run mid-January through late June 2021.

Hollings Scholarship

Attention  SOPHOMORES  studying atmospheric and oceanic sciences, environmental engineering, environmental sciences and policy, or ANY major with a strong environmental focus or interest!   The Hollings Scholarship provides two-year academic scholarships (up to a maximum of $9,500 per year) for full-time study, and a 10-week, full-time, paid internship position ($700/week) the summer after junior year at a NOAA facility. In the last six years, 29 Maryland students have won Hollings Scholarships! The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Response to Terrorism (START), based here at the University of Maryland, is now accepting applications  for the Spring 2021 Internship Program!   START is looking for interns with a wide array of skills and majors (including but not limited to: Criminology, Communications, Government, International Relations, Public Policy, History, GIS, Geography, Economics, English, Mathematics, Psychology, Languages and Statistics). ENSP400 group visits ghost forests on Eastern Shore

    The Dean's Student Advisory Council is hosting a  Virtual Student-to-Student Series  for  ALL 10 of the BSOS majors , so that current and prospective students  can learn about their majors .  The session for students interested in ENSP concentrations within the BSOS College will be held Thursday, October 22, 2020. Research Internships: Get Your Feet Wet w/ Research! I

Research Opportunities for Undergrads:  Have you ever wanted to learn more about streams and rivers and how to manage environmental problems?  If so, we are looking for internships in our lab to work on projects related to monitoring water quality in local streams on campus and also major rivers in our region.  Students can gain hands-on experience collecting water samples, taking streamflow measurements, and sample processing.  Unpaid internships are available in the beginning, but students can also have opportunities to gain course credits/grades based on initial performance and interest in field and lab projects.  Over the years, we many mentored well over 50 students and quite a few students have also had opportunities to become co-authors on published scientific papers and gain paid internships based on contributions.  Many of our students have gone onto jobs in our field and/or graduate schools, but we have also had students in other majors that gained an appreciation for the en
