Fall 2019 MLAW courses Fall 2019 registration is approaching! Are you pre-law or interested in the law? Consider registering for a 300-level MLAW course (full listing on Testudo). Students will be introduced to law and society scholarship through courses taught by University of Maryland’s faculty across a wide variety of departments and programs as well as law faculty from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. Coursework will challenge students’ assumptions about law and its function in society. Call for Volunteers Residence Hall Waste Audits Facilities Management, Residential Facilities, and Dining Services are collaborating to conduct a series of waste audits of campus residence halls. At a University of our size, there is an enormous amount of waste generated. In order to better understand this waste, it is critical that we have reliable data to properly plan for, manage, and ultimately minimize all types of waste. We are holding a series of waste audits throughout the Spring semester to gather data for the evaluation and improvement of our waste program. Audits will be held on select Fridays from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. outside of Maryland stadium. The sign up link can be found below. To support these audits, we are looking for student volunteers. Ag Internships - Summer 2019 Frederick CREST has partnerships with farms and ag businesses in Frederick that would enable students to obtain internships and employment. They will be having an information session on Thursday, March 28 from 5 pm to 7 pm. Although the opportunities are open to all students (and all majors within the college), they would prefer to work with students who are seeking academic credit for the internship.    This would be ideal for students who are from the Frederick area seeking internship opportunities.

These efforts support the overall mission of USDA, which is to protect and promote food, agriculture, natural resources and related issues. Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ) is a program within APHIS which safeguards U.S. agriculture and natural resources against the entry, establishment, and spread of economically and environmentally significant pests, and facilitates the safe trade of agricultural products. Applied Sustainability Entrepreneurship Summer in Brazil The Forest Fund will be running a summer course in applied sustainability entrepreneurship, bringing students to the deforestation forefront to understand the economics of destruction firsthand. They will learn about sustainability problems and analyze the local and international markets that have generated them (lots of externalities!). By the end of the six weeks they will have formed small teams, picked a sustainability problem, and written and pitched a business plan for a startup to address the problem. Accepting student applications C-StREAM (Chesapeake Student Recruitment, Early Advisement, and Mentoring) C-StREAM is a program focused on recruiting, advising, and mentoring college students from typically under-represented groups to prepare them for careers in environmental protection and restoration. We will work with successful applicants to identify internships and mentors and help advise them academically to ensure they are on the best track for success. Applicants for C-StREAM internships at the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Program and the EPA Chesapeake Bay Program Office are still being accepted through April 9th, 2019. For summer of 2019, the CRC will support a total of eight (8) summer interns, as made possible through through generous funding support from the US EPA Chesapeake Bay Program (CBP; 3 interns), the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office (NCBO; 4 interns), and the CRC member institutions (1 intern). Summer 2019 Internships City Wildlife City Wildlife in DC is a small wildlife rehabilitation center that is providing summer internship opportunities. They offer internships for the summer as well as volunteer opportunities year round. Work involves hands on experience with baby and injured wildlife. Plan-It Earth "ideathon" Plan-It Earth will be Georgetown University’s premier environmental sustainability ideathon on April 12-13, 2019, and will bring together students, experts, and practitioners to generate solutions to UN Sustainable Development Goals 11, 12, 14, and 15. There will be keynote speeches to kick off the event and inspire participants. Then, students will form teams and be guided by expert mentors as they SOLVE a global environmental challenge, GENERATE a tech-enabled idea, and COMPETE for up to $3,000 in cash prizes to launch their projects. Sustainability Science (M.S.) Columbia University This program is designed for students with science, engineering or math backgrounds who wish to build careers as technical sustainability practitioners. The curriculum is designed by climate scientists at our renowned Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, and focuses on the practical application of scientific tools and methods to address sustainability challenges. Students would have access to Columbia’s unparalleled resources, professional networks, and global alumni base. Part-time and full-time enrollment options, and evening courses make the program attractive for working professionals as well. Graduates are prepared for management and leadership positions in which they oversee science and other technical staff. Alaska Summer Field Study The Evergreen State College ( www.evergreen.edu ) and the Wrangell Mountains Center ( www.wrangells.org ) are offering a 7-week undergraduate field studies program in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, for which students receive 16 quarter/10 semester upper-division credits. This program has been operated for nearly 30 years and is based out of the historic town of McCarthy. The course includes significant hands-on field research skill development, and four of the seven weeks are spend exclusively in the backcountry.
