CONSERVE/DAWN Undergraduate Summer Internship Program 2023 Advertisement

Our team of scientists and educators at  CONSERVE  are facilitating the adoption of transformative on‐farm water treatment solutions that can enable the safe use of nontraditional irrigation water (e.g., advanced treated wastewater, return flows) on food crops. At the same time, our  DAWN  team is developing a decision support system that helps to increase land, nutrient, and water use efficiency in order to maximize crop production in maize, soy, and bioenergy fields. Our vision is to be a collective national resource bringing together research, outreach, and education to effectively reduce the nation’s food, energy and water challenges that are exacerbated by climate change.   With projects located throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest, we are looking for undergraduate student summer interns to assist us in our research, extension and education efforts. We seek undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing higher degrees in the fields of agricultural and natural sciences, w

Winter Term - things to know

WINTER TERM:  Registration for Winter Term opened in October. There's no obligation to register for a winter term course (personally I think you all deserve to relax!), but if you do, here are some things to be aware of: One day in Winter Term = one week in a typical semester : One course per Winter Term is enough. You only have 15 class sessions – so every day you’ve got reading and homework that you’d normally have a week to do. Manage your time (visiting with family, part-time jobs, and schoolwork) carefully. Online does not mean “easy”.  Many winter courses are online. Some online courses require you to be in front of a computer at specified times; others do not; and the balance of online and between-time assignments can vary between classes. Info about online courses are posted   HERE . Please contact course instructors in advance if you have questions; you can find their info on the   UMD Directory . Finally,   payment for Winter and Summer terms   is due immediately upon r

Part- and Full-time positions available at Alluvion Aeroponics

Alluvion Aeroponics seeks a dynamic, entrepreneurial individual wanting to open a world of opportunity in the produce distribution field where the USDA has identified weaknesses requiring investment and resourcefulness. Alluvion is part of a renaissance of the city’s legacy of growing vegetables and fruits and with it, access to healthy food, nutrition education, competitive-wage careers in modern urban agriculture, and community revitalization.   Produce grown with controlled environment agriculture (CEA)   can be harvested every month by year-round (not seasonal) employees, close to the point of consumption. Pesticide-free crops have higher yields and require far less water. Growing produce closer to the consumer reduces transportation/energy costs and helps to keep items fresher longer.   All contributing to a m

Monday Dec. 12 - last day of classes/last day to withdraw from all classes

Hopefully, no one needs this information; however, in case you or one of your friends does, here's what you need to know... In the case that “everything is going badly,” e.g, you are failing 3 or more of your classes miserably; and there is no chance to improve with what remains of the semester,   YOU CAN WITHDRAW FROM ALL CLASSES, so long as you do so BEFORE 4:30 p.m. on Monday, December 12 (the last day of classes).   This kind of situation might arise if you’ve had lingering health problems; if there’s been a medical or personal crisis in your family; or if there are other situations happening in your life that are so distracting that schoolwork has become impossible to do; and you have fallen hopelessly behind.   Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) regarding withdrawals:     WILL WITHDRAWING FROM ALL MY CLASSES LOOK BAD? Not if you do it for reasons like the one(s) given above.  In fact, it might be the WISER thing to do if a semester full of D’s and F’s is the alternative, and
