Applications Open Terps for Change Volunteer for a Semester as Terps For Change Participant! Terps For Change offers a wide array of community service sites; from working to remove invasive species to assisting aging communities, there is no shortage of opportunities with Terps For Change. Volunteers commit to a semester of weekly community service, coupled with 8 weekly dialogues where we reflect and explore the social issues related to our service. Senior T4C participant, Jesse Gerb described how, through the T4C program, he has been able to interact with and help people of varying backgrounds. He stated, "learning about people who are different from you can be great, but actually being able to go out and help people in need is something that I will never forget. Winter 2019 courses The Landscape Architecture program at UMD is offering a variety of winter term courses geared toward design GIS, and modeling. See descriptions below! LARC 121 - Digital Design Futures (GenEd: DSSP) - Students are provided with the opportunity to 1) explore basic design principles and practice, 2) explore and apply computer concepts and principles, 3) learn and apply basic computer tools used in landscape architecture and allied disciplines, and 4) demonstrate competency in design vocabulary and computer applications through demonstrated deliverables used in the built environment design fields. LARC 453 - Introduction to GIS and Hydrologic Modeling - Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and their application to hydrologic modeling. Basic GIS skills are used to manipulate and analyze spatial data to populate NRCS TR-55 hydrologic model for use in sizing constructed wetlands, bio-retention cells, and minor flood zones. DC Policy Intern - Spring 2019 Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA) is dedicated to the preservation of the outstanding wilderness at the heart of the Colorado Plateau in Utah, and the management of these lands in their natural state for the benefit of all Americans. SUWA promotes local and national recognition of the region's unique character, and supports both administrative and legislative initiatives to permanently protect the wild places in Utah within the National Wilderness Preservation System. Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program Applications for the Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program are open!  Each winter the program selects early-undergraduate Scholars from around the country to participate in a two-year conservation mentorship program centered on the summers between academic years. Their goal is to serve students from all backgrounds, including groups traditionally underrepresented in conservation, who can contribute to diversifying, redefining, and strengthening efforts to protect land, wildlife and water. They admit college freshmen and sophomores, at a stage when they can support their undergraduate careers and their choices as they graduate.  During the first year, Scholars participate on an eight-week, intensive summer course integrating conservation design, leadership and research experiences while traveling with a close group of peers and mentors. Spring 2018 Internship Lake Roland - Baltimore County Recreation & Parks   Lake Roland - Baltimore County Recreation & Parks is looking for a student who is pursuing a degree in Environmental Studies, Biology, Recreation & Parks, Park Management, Conservation, Environmental Planning, History, Education, or a related field. Interns will handle and provide care for resident animals, assist in planning/executing educational programs, and work with Rangers and Naturalists to complete park/trail maintenance projects.   While they cannot pay interns, they will work with universities to provide course/internship credit for the student(s). Internship positions at the U.S. Geological Survey Patuxent Wildlife Research Center   There are openings for unpaid internship positions at the U.S. Geological Survey Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Laurel, MD, starting ASAP and continuing into the winter, with the possibility of extension into the spring/summer. This internship involves assisting with animal care and research at a captive colony of sea ducks and diving ducks. Primary responsibilities include: assisting with daily care of birds  performing maintenance/cleaning tasks     In addition to the primary responsibilities listed, the intern may have the opportunity to assist with research if there are active research projects.   The ideal applicant: will have experience working with animals (preference with birds), and be willing to work outside in all weather conditions. UMD Wind Turbine Competition Are you interested in ways to use the things you learn in school to combat global climate change? Are you curious about how gigantic wind turbines work? Do you want to learn about the future of alternative energy systems from cutting edge researchers? We are starting a team to compete in a Department of Energy wind turbine competition this year, and want you on board. It should be an extremely fun and interesting time-- We will construct a small prototype wind turbine and build a business plan around it. We will then travel to the NREL Laboratories in Colorado and test our turbine in a wind tunnel against other universities. We are also starting a seminar series where you'll learn about the future of wind energy from top experts in industry and research.  Our chances look pretty good-- a few years ago, UMD won first place, but it takes serious work!
