Fulbright Summer Institutes for US Undergraduates US-UK Fulbright Commission offers special Summer Institutes for US citizens to come to the UK. These expenses-paid summer programs provide the opportunity for US undergraduates (Us citizens, aged over 18, see eligibility details below), with at least two years of undergraduate study left to complete, to come to the UK on a three or four week academic and cultural summer program. Participants in these programs will get the opportunity to experience an exciting academic program at a highly regarded UK University, explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK and develop their academic ability by improving presentation, research and communication skills. Gilman Study Abroad Scholarship Are you thinking about studying abroad in summer 2018 of academic year 2018-19? Are you a US CITIZEN receiving a PELL GRANT (a federal need-based educational grant)? Learn about the GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP, which provides up to $5,000 for study abroad students with financial need who receive Pell Grants. In the last two years, 58 University of Maryland students won Gilman Scholarships—a 45% acceptance rate! The deadline to apply for summer 2018 and fall/academic year 2018-19 awards is March 6, 2018. 2018 Maryland Summer Scholars Program On-Campus Info Sessions The Maryland Summer Scholars Program (MSS) provides opportunities for University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) undergraduates to spend much of the summer working closely with faculty mentors on ambitious research, scholarly, or artistic projects. The MSS program provides awards of $3,000 to approximately 25-30 undergraduates each summer. Many Summer Scholars expand their summer research into an independent study or honors thesis project the following autumn semester, and find that their research experience helps distinguish their applications for graduate study, fellowships, internships, employment and other competitive opportunities. Maryland Summer Scholars (MSS) may conduct their summer research on the College Park campus or elsewhere in the U.S. or abroad as required by the nature of the project. This course can count as your ENSP Applied Science and Policy requirement, and for others (depending on approval of your faculty advisor) a Restricted Elective: Course Description : Intended for students interested in learning how to apply ecological and environmental knowledge to real-world questions, specifically in management and policy situations. Students will learn necessary skills to obtain, manage, and analyze environmental data through hands-on training in commonly used software and a series of topical case studies. Data analysis and data management will be taught using publicly available real-world environmental data sets.

Spring 2018 course offering ANTH467: Researching Environment & Culture This course could count as a Restricted Elective - check with your concentration advisor! How do humans shape their surrounding environment? How does the environment shape human communities and culture? In this applied and project-oriented course, students will explore conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services through the lens of the African vulture crisis . Coursework offers opportunities for ethnographic and mixed methods training while learning more about the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services as an ecological and environmental anthropology issue. Student work will contribute to a larger synthesis project conducted by an international, interdisciplinary team aimed at preventing the collapse of vulture populations across sub-Saharan Africa .
