2017 Internships - National Parks The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the “clearinghouse” for 500+ internships in the National Parks as well as other federal and/or non-profit agencies.    Even more exciting: The SCA wants students from ALL years (freshman summer  through college graduates) and from all majors and programs, including biology, business, geology, history, wildlife, education, anthropology, geography, and more! Each year, the Chesapeake Conservation Corps Program places young adults (ages 18-25) with nonprofit or government agencies to work full-time in the environmental field for a one-year term of paid service in the Chesapeake Bay region. Participants receive hands-on green job and leadership experience through on-the-ground experience leading and assisting with projects and programs for their host sites, extensive trainings hosted by the Trust and other service-learning opportunities including grant writing and project management. Summer Research Experiences (REU's) NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) are excellent opportunities for highly qualified students who want to explore a career in science research . Typically, REU sites select 8-12 students from across the country; and provide housing, social activities, and a $5,000+ stipend. Application deadlines fall between February 1 - March 15 (they vary by institution) and require a personal statement, resume, and 1-2 faculty recommendations. Successful applicants generally have a 3.25+ GPA and previous research experience or a significant internship . Start planning in late Fall of junior year to take best advantage of these opportunities. Most participants are rising seniors; however, sophomores and new graduates may be eligible in some cases. Morgan State University   PEARL - Patuxent Environmental and Aquatic Research Center Apply by March 1 The Internship Program at the Patuxent Environmental & Aquatic Research Laboratory (PEARL) offers undergraduate and recently graduated college students unique hands-on experiences in an environmental research setting . Interns will gain first-hand experience and knowledge of field and laboratory research and project design. During the internship, each student will develop a research project under the guidance and supervision of a PEARL faculty research scientist, and present the findings in a mini-symposium at the end of the summer. This program is open to all undergraduate students and those who recently graduated. You do not have to be a US citizen to apply, but you do need to have a social security number. GOVERNOR'S SUMMER INTERNSHIPS Apply by -- March 1 (priority deadline) The Governor’s Summer Internship Program introduces college students to the unique challenges and rewards of working within MD State Government while earning a $3,000 stipend.  For 10 weeks, interns: Work in state government agencies on substantive projects, including drafting speeches and correspondence, tracking legislation, attending hearings, assisting with constituent case work, and researching policy options.   Participate in seminars with top Maryland officials and make site visits to State facilities.   Develop policy papers on a significant issue facing Maryland (e.g. the Chesapeake Bay, crime, care for the elderly) and present their findings in person to the Governor. National Environmental Justice Conference & Training Program March 8-10, Washington, DC Leaders from various sectors will engage in 3 days of free exchange of ideas and approaches to achieving environmental justice. Federal Hiring Update for Graduating Seniors The federal government has been in the news lately because of the uncertainty surrounding how they will deal with President Trump's Executive order to reduce the federal workforce and temporarily freeze hiring. There are several exceptions and more to the story. Click HERE to review the details.  What does this mean for a graduating senior? - Keep in mind that the order is temporary and OPM has 90 days to make recommendations and create a plan. - Different agencies are dealing with the order in different ways. There is no one hiring statement that will fit all agencies. - The agencies that the University of Maryland University Career Center have heard from, still plan on participating in career fairs and events on campus because they want to maintain their branding on campus to attract talented candidates when the freeze is lifted.
