Research Intern, Climate Change- Pan American Development Foundation (PADF)

In April 2020, PADF signed the NGO Climate Compact which committed the organization to taking action to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. As one of the first actions towards that commitment, PADF completed a greenhouse gas emissions baseline study for the 2019 fiscal year. Armed with this data and with the support of PADF’s leadership, PADF is taking the first steps towards further understanding, measuring, and setting targets to reduce the organization’s carbon footprint. In December 2021, PADF joined the Climate Accountability in Development Collective. 2022 DOE Scholars – Internships – Environmental Management

The  U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Management (EM)  is seeking Scholars to engage in projects and activities related EM’s mission.  EM’s first priority is to ensure the safety and health of the public and EM’s workforce while continuing to protect the environment. EM carries out the mission using sound business practices, innovative management approaches, and science and technology to reduce risks and costs within the EM regulatory framework. The Scholar will receive training, mentoring, and additional support to effectively accomplish appointment goals. Appointments may involve projects focused on engineering, science, research, technology, policy, business, and government relations. Summer 2022 course about bird habitat and ecology

Dr. Shannon Pederson Browne in ENST will be offering a special topics 3-credit course (ENST499 sect ion 0304) d uring Summer Session IA (May 31 - June 17) that involves surveying birds that collide with buildings and their habitat. We will meet at ANSC 0538 at 6am each morning for walking transect surveying followed by lecture. This course will also involve analysis techniques using R Studio. Students will learn how to conduct a walking transect, identify birds to species-level, collect habitat data, run quantitative analysis, and write a scientific journal manuscript. No experience is required and all training will be provided.  Students who are interested in this course should consult their academic advisor to see if this course can count as an elective and then reach out to Dr. Pederson by May 15th if interested ( shannpb@umd.edu)

National Caucus of Environmental Legislators Summer Outreach Intern

Responsibilities The National Caucus of Environmental Legislators (NCEL) seeks a highly motivated intern who is passionate about the environment and interested in learning more about state-level policy to support the planning and execution of NCEL's National Forum, as well as assisting with program work. The Forum is NCEL's premier annual event, bringing together roughly 150 state legislators to collaborate on issues that include renewable energy, and land and wildlife conservation. This year's forum will also place a high priority on environmental justice, and applicants interested in that issue are especially encouraged to apply. We reach out to more than 24,000 children each year through our nature field trip programs, Summer Camps, and more. Congratulations to Kalina Gibson, who was recently awarded the   Boren Scholarship !  This   scholarship helps fund study abroad by U.S. undergraduate students in world regions critical to U.S. interests. This fall, Kalina will be traveling to India to study Hindi and learn about the clean energy transition taking place there.  Way to go, Kalina!

SEDS@UMD events

SEDS@UMD is a club dedicated to fostering interest in space through technical projects and hosting space talks. We have two upcoming events with speakers from industry, and we would love for you all to attend! On April 28th at 6:45 PM in EGR1108, we will be hosting a talk by Ms. Therese Jones, Senior Director of Policy at Satellite Industry Association, on the development of Space Policy. On May 5th at 6:30 PM in EGR1108, Mr. William Kramer will be presenting on space sustainability and the environmental effects of space exploitation. Both of these talks will be a great opportunity for students to interact with the space industry and build a stronger understanding of how the industry is growing. Sustainability Fund Grant Workshop

Mon, April 25, 6-8 pm , Innovation Loft- ESJ 2101 This in-person workshop is for students interested in applying for a Sustainability Fund grant. During the workshop, you will brainstorm and troubleshoot your grant proposal ideas to advance campus sustainability.  A complimentary dinner will be provided.  This workshop will provide an opportunity to identify proposal topics, brainstorm ideas, learn and utilize the steps of Design Thinking, connect with potential grant collaborators, and devise an action plan for developing a strong Sustainability Fund grant application prior to the deadline.
