Scholarships Available Wildlife Habitat Council annual conference Student scholarships are available for current college students to attend the annual Wildlife Habitat Council conference held this year from Nov. 8-9 at the Baltimore Marriot Waterfront Hotel. Each scholarship will include full registration, hotel accommodations and a travel stipend, as required. The deadline to submit an application is September 15, 2017. Animal Care Intern USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center The USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center is seeking qualified applicants for 1-2 part-time animal care interns with the Sea Bird Research Program in Laurel, MD.   They are looking to fill these positions ASAP. This internship involves assisting with animal care and research at a captive colony of seaducks. There will also be ample opportunities for interns to get involved with the training of ducklings for ongoing behavioral studies. The colony consists of 9 different species including diving and dabbling ducks. Primary responsibilities include: Assisting with daily care of ducklings and adult birds Assisting in behavioral training techniques Performing maintenance/cleaning tasks as assigned Conducting behavioral observations The ideal applicant will have experience working with animals, be interested in biological research, and be willing to work hard outside in all weather conditions. New Fall 2017 course ENSP399E - Special Topics: The Role of Evidence-based Environmental Advocacy in Environmental Politics Do you care about the environment, but feel like you are too inexperienced or too young to make a difference? Consider taking ENSP399E! ENSP399E is a class taught by two undergraduate students who feel passionate about making a difference, but felt similarly powerless and wanted to find a way to help others feel like they could make a difference. The goal of this course is to help students feel more able to affect change by teaching effective tools to become better advocates. Students in this class will hear from several guest speakers, email members of congress, analyze environmental advocacy efforts and read about techniques for effective advocacy from famous environmentalists like Jane Goodall. Two ENSP Majors Named 2017 Hollings Scholars This year, four University of Maryland students have been awarded Earnest F. Hollings Scholarships by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Education. Of these four recipients, half of them are Environmental Science and Policy (ENSP) students! The NOAA Hollings Scholarship Program provides a financial award of up to $9,500 annually for two years beginning in September 2017; and includes a full-time, 10-week, paid summer research internship at a NOAA facility the summer after junior year. Agriculture Stewardship and Conservation Certificate Penn State University Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences is now offering an undergraduate certificate program to help train the next generation of conservation professionals to help agricultural producers meet soil health and water quality goals. Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences recently announced a new for-credit option for undergraduate students interested in careers in agricultural conservation. The new Agricultural Stewardship and Conservation Certificate, which will be administered by the Environmental Resource Management (ERM) program, is available to students in a variety of existing four-year undergraduate majors in the College. It was developed as a result of priority recommendations and input coming from agriculture and environment stakeholders who met in March of last year to discuss agriculture and water quality.
