Geology Colloquium Series Diana McKnight - National Science Foundation WHEN : Friday, September 29 TIME : 3:00pm WHERE : Plant Science Building, room 1130 SEMINAR TITLE : Glacial meltwater streams in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica: ecosystems waiting for water The McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica is comprised of alpine and terminal glaciers, large expanses of patterned ground, and permanently ice-covered lakes in the valley floors, which are linked by glacial meltwater streams that flow during the austral summer. These valleys were first explored by Robert Scott and his party in 1903. In 1968 the New Zealand Antarctic Program began a gauging network on the Onyx River, a 32 km river that is the longest river in Antarctica. As part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long-Term Ecological research project, our research group has continued to monitor streamflow in the Onyx River and 15 other first-order streams in adjacent valleys. Internship opportunity Department of Justice - Environment and Natural Resources Division Overview of Section: The Environmental Enforcement Section is one of the largest litigating Sections in the Department and includes nearly one-half of the Division's lawyers. The Section is responsible for bringing civil judicial actions under most federal laws enacted to protect public health and the environment from the adverse effects of pollution, such as the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Oil Pollution Act, RCRA and the Superfund law (CERCLA). The breadth of the Section's practice is extensive and challenging. It includes cases of national scope, such as cases against multiple members of an identified industry, to obtain broad compliance with the environmental laws. Through its enforcement of the Superfund law, the Section seeks to compel responsible parties either to clean up hazardous waste sites or to reimburse the United States for the cost of cleanup

Applications now being accepted University Sustainability Fund This year, the University Sustainability Fund has approximately $400,000 available for projects to promote environmental sustainability and positively impact the student experience at University of Maryland. Grants are supported by student fees and administered through the University Sustainability Council . Applications are now being accepted for 2017-2018 projects. The priority deadline for applications is October 15th with a final deadline of January 15th. Apply now . Plant Science Seminar Lecture Plant Science Seminar Lecture with Dr. Thomas Gordon:  "Physiological Plasticity in Plant-Fungal Interactions” As a professor at UC Davis, Dr. Gordon's responsibilities include research on plant pathogenic fungi to advance principles of plant pathology and develop information that will contribute to more effective management of plant diseases. He teaches a graduate course in plant pathology and an undergraduate general education course on fungal biology.
