Summer Internship Anacostia Watershed Society The Anacostia Watershed Society (AWS) is looking for environmental science (and related disciplines) students for its 2017 Summer River Restoration Internship program (May-August approximately). This is a great opportunity to get students involved in real world watershed stewardship issues such as stormwater management, wetland restoration, reforestation, arboriculture, SAV propagation, environmental monitoring, invasive plant management, outdoor recreation and environmental education. The internship will be based in Bladensburg, MD with minimal travel to sites in Prince George's county and the District of Columbia.

International Programs in AGNR Upcoming Food Security Webinars April 3-4: Third Annual Food Security Symposium: Commercial Agriculture in the Tropical Environments The tropics contain some of the most important biomes for managing a variety of environmental challenges from biodiversity to climate change. But at the same time, agricultural expansion in South America shows that the tropics can be highly productive in terms of grain production. Additionally, agricultural intensification holds promise to reduce poverty and malnutrition among the many rural poor residing in tropical zones. This symposium addresses the complex tradeoffs between environmental stewardship and agricultural intensification in the tropics. Primary responsibilities will include recruiting and managing volunteers for bat projects, ordering, maintaining and decontaminating gear, assisting with live catches of bats, conducting acoustic surveys and analyzing the calls, preparing outreach materials, resolving bat/human conflicts and managing data. These positions will also include educating visitors to Fort Delaware on the importance of bats, the effect of White-nose Syndrome on bats and what people can do to help protect bats. Position will include escorting people through parts of the fort where bats hibernate and making sure that park visitors are aware of rules and guidelines and ways they can help protect bats. Research Internship UMD BATS Team Looking for an internship opportunity for Spring 2017? Enjoy working outdoors and road trips? The UMD BATS (Bat Acoustic Traveling Study) Team is looking for research interns to conduct field research next spring throughout VA, DC, MD, and DE. Interns are trained on how to program bat detectors to record bat echolocation calls, how to record sound and light pollution, estimate tree height and canopy cover, measure DBH, how to collect insects, and how to use a hand-held GPS.   If you're available every Saturday all day (8am-8pm) February 25 through June 17, please send in your resume, cover letter, and unofficial transcripts to Shannon Pederson at shannonp@umd.edu by December 2.
