ENSP Dog Walking event - THIS SUNDAY! ENSPire, the ENSP Student Advisory Board, is organizing a dog-walking activity THIS SUNDAY! This is a great opportunity to meet others in the major and de-stress from classes by playing with some cute puppies. Be sure to sign up using the Google doc below! DRIVERS ARE NEEDED! Undergraduate Position Available UMD Entomology Insect Evolutionary Genomics Lab   The Fritz lab in the Department of Entomology is recruiting an undergraduate summer research assistant. Our lab focuses on the ecology and evolutionary genomics of insects. This student would be primarily involved in a project exploring the ways that ecological features on the landscape influence gene flow and behavior in Culex pipiens mosquitoes, a primary vector of West Nile Virus. Opportunities to participate in other projects in the lab may also be available as time permits.   Primary responsibilities will include trapping and collecting mosquitoes in the field, mosquito identification and rearing, and laboratory experiments, including DNA isolation and PCR. There will be a strong field component to this research and the assistant will likely experience inclement weather, dirty conditions, and some lifting and moving of heavy objects may be required. Summer 2019 Bat Acoustic Internship Looking for an internship opportunity over Summer 2019? Enjoy working outdoors and road trips?   UMD's Appalachian Lab is looking for interns to drive transects throughout central Maryland most nights of June to record bat echolocation calls. The data you collect will help UMD Appalachian Lab and MDDNR learn which bat species are present during summer...which is extremely important. If you are interested in this opportunity and willing to work most nights in June, you can earn a great skillset highly desired by employers, gas reimbursement, and possibly receive college credit. Positions available Maryland DNR The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife & Heritage Service is currently accepting applications for one full-time and one part-time Seasonal Contractual position (Natural Resources Technician III). The Department seeks two highly motivated individuals to assist with a project to test a rapid assessment protocol for characterizing stream-associated wetland habitats and providing information on their condition. Field work will take place in southern Maryland (Anne Arundel, Prince George's, Calvert, and Charles counties). Apply Today AGNR Peer Mentor For ENSP students enrolled in an AGNR-sponsored concentration Applications due Monday, May 6th, 2019 (updated deadline!) Responsibilities : The main responsibility of AGNR Peer Mentors is to assist AGNR undergraduate students with everyday campus issues, such as advising, registration, and more. During office hours, you will have walk-in appointments with students in the college. You will help them become familiar with registration procedures (Testudo), assist them with the preparation of their 4-year academic plan, and explain their progress toward degree benchmarks. You will work with students in subsequent semesters to pre-select courses and build tentative schedules, print academic audits, and otherwise prepare for their regular faculty advising appointments. Summer Seasonal Wildlife Tech The UMCES Appalachian Lab is conducting NABat stationary point acoustic surveys throughout Maryland this summer. The MD Dept. of Natural Resources is hiring a technician to assist with equipment setup and mist netting. The applicant needs to be a sophomore with two years of experience, but additional education can be substituted for the experience requirement. The lab can train students to do all the required tasks. Jug Bay Summer Education Internship (paid) Extended Deadline: April 30, 2019 The Friends of Jug Bay (FOJB) is a non-profit organization that supports education, stewardship, and research programs at the Sanctuary. FOJB annually funds two research and one education/outreach undergraduate/graduate summer research internships to advance the Sanctuary’s knowledge on topics of interest regarding its natural resources and social history. Internships are open to qualified undergraduate and graduate students who will conduct a summer research project within Sanctuary grounds under the mentorship of a staff member or an associated researcher. Applied Sustainability Entrepreneurship Summer in Brazil The Forest Fund will be running a summer course in applied sustainability entrepreneurship, bringing students to the deforestation forefront to understand the economics of destruction firsthand. They will learn about sustainability problems and analyze the local and international markets that have generated them (lots of externalities!). By the end of the six weeks they will have formed small teams, picked a sustainability problem, and written and pitched a business plan for a startup to address the problem. ENST summer 2019 courses The ENST department will be offering ENST 233 Introduction to Environmental Health (DSNS - GenEd) during summer session I. It will be a small class size so students will get a lot of great personal attention! They are also offering a new course this summer - ENST 499F: Special Topics in Environmental Science and Technology; Vector-Borne Disease in Changing Environments: Socio-ecolgoical Theory and Methodologies Credits: 2 Prerequisite: Senior Standing. There are two field trips scheduled for June 5 and June 12 last 3.5 hours each. An interdisciplinary study of pests and vectors in human-made landscapes, with a focus on mosquitoes and ticks in the temperate US. We will focus on social and environmental factors affecting infestations and their management, and explore important ecological, economic, and health impacts of infestation, key research questions, and control strategies in the 21st century.
