ECON Winter Course on Sustainability

Need an I-Series course?  Consider ECON181: Putting a Price on the Environment: An Economist's Perspective on Sustainability Course description: How does society balance the benefits of environmental protection and preservation against the costs? Though some might say that the environment is priceless, economists recognize that every action involves trade-offs. This course investigates sustainability through comparing costs and benefits. From this perspective, other questions arise: How can we design policies that incentivize sustainable choices? Why might usual market functioning fail to achieve sustainability? Do we need to put a price on the environment in order to protect it? How do we measure an economy's "success"? This course explores the answers to these and other related questions from an economist's perspective.

Data Wrangling and Visualization with R (PLSC498B): Spring 2021

Data Wrangling and Visualization with R  (PLSC498B). The R Statistical Environment has fundamentally changed how scientists manage, analyze, share and communicate data. The power and flexibility of R open myriad opportunities. The downside of this power is that it creates a daunting barrier to entering the R universe. Development of a constellation of tools called  The Tidyverse  is lowering those barriers, but its unique language and philosophy can still be daunting. The purpose of this course is to immerse you in the Tidyverse so that you can use its tools to harness the power of R in ways that will help you transform and elevate your research. Through a combination of lecture, hands-on demos, quizzes, and increasingly independent coding exercises, you will learn the fundamentals of using R. You will gain experience with approaches for handling, summarizing and plotting data in ways that are repeatable and transparent. This is  NOT , however, a statistics class. Rather, you will le

Not if you do it for reasons like the one(s) given above.  In fact, it might be the WISER thing to do if a semester full of D’s and F’s is the alternative, an

"Netiquette"

" Netiquette " is network etiquette, the "do's and don'ts" of online communication. Netiquette covers both common courtesy online and the informal "rules of the road" of the virtual world. The online work environment can certainly be a struggle, and there are many challenges we face that are often out of our control, like internet troubles, personal or family responsibilities, distractions in the background (from pets and humans!) or our mental health. However, there are a lot of things we CAN control to the best of our abilities, like how we present ourselves in online meetings or in the virtual classroom.  You may not realize this, but faculty, staff, other students, or those who you are in meetings with do take notice, so it’s important to remind ourselves of the “Netiquette” rules that are applied to online spaces
