Sustainability Leadership Retreat

Leadership Training, January 26-28, 2018 at ThorpeWood, near Thurmont, MD

You are cordially invited to join folks from other academic institutions for an exciting weekend of leadership training activities at beautiful ThorpeWood in the Catoctin Mountains. Everyone knows that our country and our world faces many significant social, environmental and economic challenges, but most of us have not thought about how interconnected these problems are. Further, a great many of us are concerned enough to want to help, but either don’t know where to start or don’t believe they are the right person to be exercising leadership. We also tend to feel isolated- as if we are the only ones doing this work. If this feels familiar and you want to do something about it, we encourage you to attend!

The lead instructor for this retreat will be Paul Kazyak. Paul has been teaching graduate student courses, including leadership and sustainability, at Johns Hopkins University for more than two decades. Paul will be assisted by peer instructors who have been through this cutting edge training previously.

Time: Training will begin on Friday, January 26th at 7 PM, and end by 3:00 PM on Sunday January 28th.

Format: To maximize student choice in the topics they learn about, we anticipate running 3 concurrent sessions for a good portion of the weekend. Some activities will be as an entire group, and some activities will be held outside. One of the keystone events of the weekend will be a session where students discuss ways to better align efforts among the institutions represented.

Location: Training will be held at ThorpeWood Lodge, in the Catoctin Mountains near Thurmont, MD. For directions or to view the facility, go to www.thorpewood.org. [Note: ThorpeWood, a non-profit whose focus is on at-risk youth. The campus and main lodge are comparable to Camp David and are thus perfect for a weekend of deep learning and reflection]

Cost: The cost for food will be $20. All attendees must pre-register and pre-pay by January 22nd at 5pm. Email Paul at kazyakpaul@gmail.com for more information on how to register. It is import that we know who all is coming and what dietary preferences there are so that our planning is the best that it can be.

What to bring: Warm, layered clothes (including gloves and a hat), indoor sleeping bag, mattress pad, toiletries and towel for showers, flashlight, notebook.

How to register: Email Paul Kazyak at kazyakpaul@gmail.com
