Department of Geology lecture series
Dr. Gene Likens

Dr. Gene E. Likens, President Emeritus of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies
and Distinguished Research Professor at the University of Connecticut, will be coming to UMD to give a lecture entitled:

"Acid Rain: A long and unfinished journey from discovery to political action”

Dr. Likens' research mainly focuses on the ecology and biogeochemistry of forest and aquatic ecosystems. He discovered acid rain in North America while working at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire. He and his team also documented the link between the combustion of fossil fuels and an increase in the acidity of precipitation: https://www.caryinstitute.org/science-program/our-scientists/dr-gene-e-likens
