UMD students needed for acoustic bat survey

Dr. Shannon Browne in ENST is hiring students to acoustically survey a large field site in Montgomery County, MD. The student team will work together to move bat detectors once each week around the field site throughout fall semester, download echolocation files to a lab computer, run acoustic analysis through an automated identification program, upload results to a shared cloud folder, and draft a report for several wildlife conservation agencies. All training, demonstrations, and equipment will be provided once team members are selected and the weekly schedule is determined.

This is an unpaid position; however, this hands-on field and lab experience looks great on resumes and students may earn college credit (3 credits of ENST499 section 2104 Special Topics in Environmental Science & Technology).  Students are in charge of coordinating their own transportation to the field site and, due to the nature of field work, should be able to hike up to 2 miles while carrying 10 pounds of field equipment.

Interested students are encouraged to submit their cover letter, resume, and unofficial transcript to shannpb@umd.edu with "bat survey" in the subject line by Sept 7 for best consideration.
