At Risk Species Seasonal Technician Position

 

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife is offering a six-month technician position with an anticipated start date of April 15, 2021. The employee will work with staff in the Wildlife Diversity Branch and will primarily be assisting with a variety of surveys for at-risk species (including bats, hellbenders, small mammals, and crayfish) throughout Kentucky. Applicants must be willing to work for long days (> 10 hours) under physically challenging conditions. Activities will include conducting emergence counts at bat maternity sties, bat mist netting surveys, stream surveys, and other work as needed. The position is based out of Frankfort, KY, but travel throughout the state will be required. Travel to study sites will be by state vehicle, and travel expenses will be reimbursed.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must have a valid driver’s license. Applicants must have some college-level coursework in ecology, wildlife biology, or a related field. Applicants should be in good physical condition and be able to work at night and in hot, humid field conditions where encounters with snakes, bears, biting insects, etc. are possible. Applicants should be comfortable performing data entry and other computer-based work.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to individuals that have current rabies pre-exposure prophylaxis and have experience with field surveys for non-game species. Experience using R, ArcMap 10.x, and Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word is also preferred.

 

Duration: April 15 through fall, flexible depending on availability (limited term of 6-months).

 

Salary: $11.22 per hour; usually working 30-40 hrs/week
