For Love of Children - Outdoor Ed Center
Are you interested in teaching, discovering, guiding and exploring the outdoors? If so, come work with the staff at the Outdoor Education Center of For Love of Children for a summer of outdoor adventure! The Outdoor Education Center (OEC) is seeking qualified individuals to teach outdoor and environmental education to youth in Harpers Ferry, WV. Summer Program Counselors will have the opportunity to facilitate low and high ropes courses, lead outdoor adventure activities and create and implement environmental education curriculum.
Individual Responsibilities
- Participate in paid staff training, June 6 – June 17, 2016
- Serve as a leader and mentor for all participants
- primarily youth ages 10-16
- Instruct groups of ten to fourteen in outdoor, environmental and adventure education classes as well as overnights, including:
- High and Low ropes course facilitation
- Canoeing trips
- Rock climbing
- Recycling and Composting
- Basic Survival Skills
- Watershed and local ecology studies
- Renewable Energy and lessons in Sustainability
- Manage physical and emotional safety of participants: maintain and encourage a safe environment
- Residential duties: Staff will sleep in cabins with campers Monday through Friday
Cooperative Staff Responsibilities
- Lead evening activities
- Attend weekly staff meetings
- Co-facilitate with other counselors
- Maintain positive team environment
Qualifications
- Related work experience
- Ability to work long hours in all kinds of weather
- Desire to work with youth in an outdoor setting
- Sincere interest in creating a learning environment
- Experience with team-building, ropes/challenge courses and adventure/ environmental education is a plus
- Must be at least 18 years old
