ENSP alumni resources

Two ENSP alums have reached out to the our program to make themselves available as a career resource our students! They are willing to share their perspectives of the job market, career paths, and professional development opportunities for those who may be intimidated by the job-seeking process, or for those who just need some guidance as they being thinking about future careers!

Their names, biographies and contact information are below – feel free to reach out to them!

Rachel Krasna
I graduated from the University of Maryland in Summer 2010 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science and Policy. My concentration in ENSP was Wildlife Ecology and Management. After graduating, I spent a gap year interning at NOAA’s NCCOS Program Office, developing a benthic species database and supporting salinity and sediment sample studies in Vieques Puerto Rico; and then abroad to Tel Aviv University studying coral biology and invasive oyster migration.

I attended Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanography Campus, receiving a Master’s of Science degree in Marine Biology. After graduating summer 2013, I was hired as an Environmental Scientist intern and then a full time employee with Stanley Consultants Inc. While there, I supported the office with wetland impact analysis, resource mitigation reporting and interagency coordination for Department of Transportation road and bridge expansion projects.

I later moved back north to Maryland for a contractor job with NOAA as a NEPA Specialist; primarily reviewing and streamlining agency policy documents, internal agency coordination efforts and external commenting processes with other federal agencies. I currently work for the NOAA Tides & Currents office, which provide the nation with trusted water-level and current measurements that support safe and efficient maritime commerce and sound coastal management. As an Environmental Protection Specialist, I lead my office on environmental analysis scoping, environmental and statutory compliance, inter and intra agency coordination, and ensure our operations have minimal impacts on the natural environment.

I consider myself an environmental conservationist and biologist with a broad spectrum of multidisciplinary experiences. I am available to edit resumes, provide interview tips, or answer questions about job networking, career guidance, Federal Employment, or my career experience in general! I can be reached via email (rachelkrasna@gmail.com).

Lauren McAllister

I graduated from the University of Maryland in Spring 2016 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science and Policy. My concentration in ENSP – Land Use. Once I graduated, I immediately entered a position at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as an Oak Ridge Associated Universities contactor in the Office of Research and Development. At the EPA, I worked with EPA’s Innovation Team, which is a collection of federal employees that worked together to create better ways to solve environmental problems (eg. Improving regulation, participating in community programs, and establishing external partnerships).

I recently left my position at EPA to work for Booz Allen Hamilton as a senior consultant to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). As a senior consultant at DOE, I work with federal employees in ARPA-E (the agency tasked with promoting and funding research and development of advanced energy technologies) as a project manager and assist with ARPA-E’s federal grant programs.

During my time at UMD, I always viewed myself as a generalist. I knew I wanted to build a career in environmental science, but I didn’t know much beyond that. My friends were pursuing drastically different majors, so my connections to the environmental field in my network were minimal. Because I had to build my career starting from scratch right out of school, I have a lot of learned experience that I think might be helpful to students that are currently in a similar situation.

I am available to edit resumes, provide interview tips, or answer questions about Booz Allen, the EPA, or my career experience in general! I can be contacted via email (lmcalli14@gmail.com).
